Comic-Con Aftermath, Blocked by China

Posted by TomFulp Aug. 1, 2007 @ 2:20 AM EDT

Big thanks to everyone who visited us at Comic-Con! It was a lot of fun and turnout keeps growing every year.

Our return flight ran late and the baggage claim took forever, so I didn't get home until 2am last night. Comic-Con might seem like a vacation, but it's a pretty grueling week - setting up a booth, standing in front of it for nine hours, then drinking for the rest of the night. Yeah it's a lot of fun, but it wears you out. At the end of each day, I would walk back to the hotel, give April a late-night call, sleep for 5-6 hours and start all over.

I had just started adjusting to Pacific time by the end, so now it's 2am EST / 11pm PST and I'm having a hard time falling asleep. It was never hard to fall asleep during Comic-Con; I shut down the moment I closed my eyes. Now I'm thinking about all the things I need to catch up on, the nearly 2,000 emails and PMs that I didn't already get through today. I think about how I need to get back to work on Castle Crashers, but I don't know what to do about all the emails and PMs, all of which I do read through. Not to mention I'm wasting my time writing this.

So I'm watching Current TV and I just noticed they changed "Google Current" to "InfoMania", thus removing the Google association. I wonder if Google wasn't comfortable associating themselves with political topics. On an unrelated note, Newgrounds has been blocked by the entire country of China. They apparently do that to a lot of sites, but it sucks nonetheless. Artists from China can't submit their stuff here without going through a proxie now. They also can't respond back and defend their government when I say it's COMPLETELY STUPID! They should focus their efforts on making sure competitors in the 2008 Olympics don't have to wear face masks from all the smog, rather than worry about what people say on the Internet.

I should go to bed.

thats too bad about the chinese government (or whoever does that). Most proxies don't show javascript or Flash, If i'm correct, because ive never been able to do certain things around on the website (like logging in) whilst on a proxy. Maybye I'm wrong.

Nice work at the Comic-Con.

Why Does China Do This? Its Not Like We Are A Threat Or Something.. I Mean Holy Hell, Theres So Many Stuff In The Streets Of China That Should Be Fixed Yet They Rather Focus On Unimportant Stuff Like Banning Websites! And What So Wrong With Newgrounds? Sure, Theres A Mature Content Section, But Its Not The Main Part Of The Site! Maybe China Is Pissed That We Keep Making Fun Of Them In The BBS (Art Forum) In Other News.. I Guess I Missed Alot At Comic-Con. I Guess I'll Have To Go Next Year .. Oh Well.. I'm Tired Too.. Bed Time!

This is why I am proud to be an American. Government doesn't control what I do (although there are some nut jobs that would disagree). I submit movies of whatever I want, watch things I can't believe submitted by other people. I think that China should worry about other stuff then blocking websites. For one thing there is 1,321,851,888 people in china (according to Google). I say fuck their government. Oh well. Good luck getting some sleep Tom. I'm having some trouble myself =P.

Well... welcome back.

(lets raid China?)

Aug. 1, 2007 | 9:15 AM RupeeClock says:

Pfft, they block everything on the internet because of all the copyright problems over there I bet.

I mean come on, they have a chinese knock off of Disney Land, for real, stolen characters from all over and even copying Mickey Mouse, claiming it's an original character who is a cat with big ears.

I wonder if China blocked youtube.

Eitherway comic-con sounds exciting, but exciting like a dream job so it's still work. :p
It'd be nice to see what it's like sometime.

Aug. 1, 2007 | 10:36 AM KupaMan says:

So does this mean we can be incredibly hateful to the Chinese now? No one on NG is going to take offense now, except those white, bleeding-heart assholes who are offended by everything that is targeted toward anyone but themselves.

Aug. 1, 2007 | 10:36 AM MelodiousOrpheus says:

That's a real shame. There is so much artistic talent (and flash talent especially) in China. I was expecting Chinese talent to start submitting lots of quality stuff to Newgrounds as the site got out there more. I guess that isn't going to happen now :(

Aug. 1, 2007 | 10:50 AM Gi-go says:

This means no more Xiao Xiao, haha, like hes actually put anything on here in years. I'm glad you guys didn't die or anything, I'm coming there next year, or the one after to meet you guys. I feel like I'm missing out on so much. It sucks that you have to waste your time going through PMs and emails though. I always feel bad when PMing you.

But hey, I got my first weekly award!

Aug. 1, 2007 | 1:57 PM SlashFirestorm says:

Fuck China. Bah.

Glad Comic-Con was awesome. It was pretty awesome watching the webcam, heh.

NOW GET BACK TO WORK MISTER :-D

Aug. 1, 2007 | 2:57 PM Zack says:

Can they really block off all of China from Newgrounds? I mean come on!

Aug. 1, 2007 | 4:57 PM Girouette says:

NG is blocked in China... because of no censors and adult content? Well here's something for China: ...I can't curse in Chinese, fuck. Anyway they've blocked every porn site known to man, every flash site, every site with video hosting, and all forums. As long as it's hosted from an American IP. There's a site out there with a list of all the sites China blocked.

Aug. 2, 2007 | 7:07 AM herblin says:

the chinese government is so corupt. Who wouldent be with so many tiny yellow people working for you though? There like oompaloompas in a computer factory

Aug. 2, 2007 | 6:30 PM CaptainBob says:

at least all the flashes won't end up on chinsworld.com

Aug. 2, 2007 | 8:57 PM Warchamp7 says:

The china thing is a thing they are putting in effect to limit internet usage there because of the so many kids that are constantly on.

I think they did something to limite internet use to 4 hours a day.

That would suck.
Welcome back Tom

Aug. 3, 2007 | 11:12 PM RaW-Toons says:

I had no idea that China had that kind of repression regarding censorship. Ironically I'm going to move to Beijing (I live in Mexico City) in a couple of months and I was planning to start doing flash games and movies and post them here on NG... seems like I gotta learn about proxys and shit like that. :(

Aug. 4, 2007 | 4:38 PM KungFuCow says:

I know the feeling of adjusting to sleeping in differing time zones because I visit Lithuania nearly every summer, it sucks, but you adjust quick.

Also, I just today got my stickers. The Comic-Con 07 card and the Tankmen + Pico stickers are awesome! Thanks Tom : )

i was in china when it happened, i was like WTF???
i tought that the site was off for some time but after a week of it i knew china had another victim.

Aug. 9, 2007 | 12:34 PM wierdtails says:

HOW DARE THOSE CHINESE F***KERS BLOCK US?!!
Seriously, what did we do? It's not like we're bad or anything. Having an entire country block us sucks @$$ (especially if it's the one with the biggest population). I'm sure glad I'm not Chinese. I can see anything I want anywhere on the Internet.
If I ever learn to hack, the chinese government is gonna be #1 on my hit-list.

Aug. 14, 2007 | 5:03 PM WarSyndicate says:

Well, just the People's Republic of China....not those autonomus regions (Hong Kong, and Macau), or the Republic of China (Taiwan).....It's all fucked up and stupid out there. Socialism just doesn't work.

Aug. 15, 2007 | 6:19 PM Sir-Grimlord says:

Well you know this might be a good thing... there are sweatshops in China for just about anything, it would only have been a matter of time until they came up with one for Newgrounds. Just Imagine: two hundred people sitting in a factory, all voting 5 or 0 on every flash that comes out instantly...

Aug. 16, 2007 | 9:38 PM Mufakamills says:

And because of this people seem to think you are working with the Chinese mafia on a plan to blow up the world. That sucks though that they blocked newgrounds.

Aug. 20, 2007 | 6:26 PM peterf1 says:

Tom, it's a communist country. They don't always apply the best possible judgment in deciding what they block. (Just like the comic code)

Sep. 3, 2007 | 8:11 AM squeakytoad says:

Ah, that sucks.
I feel for those guys, currently being in a country that blocked Newgrounds for a while once. Fortunately, the government here has made a rather smart move and cut down on the censorship of such sites as NG and YouTube (which was also recently blocked).

Sep. 12, 2007 | 5:08 AM Kenzu says:

I CAN HELP YOU UNBLOCK NEWGROUNDS IN CHINA!

BOTH VIEWS
First of all you should understand both views. Your view seems to be that everything should be uncensored. Their view is that unsuitable content must be blocked. I must say that I agree with what China does partially, I see why they do what they do, although I must admit blocking the whole site is a bit too much. (but much easier than employing many people to go over all submissions each day and blocking unsuitable ones).

REASON WHY BLOCKED
The most likely reason why it is blocked is that this site grants evereyone the possibility accessing every single submission, even pornographic. I would also like to express my concern about collections of excessive violence, which include submissions on how to commit suicide, and how much fun it is to kill people. I dont think anyone should be exposed to such flash. There is still a lot of offensive flash, not only sexual and violent, but also political. Especially a positive portrayal of Hitler in some flash and excessive criticism on China...

POSSIBILITY TO UNBLOCK
They are not going to lower their censorship pollicies because of Beijing Olympics, and they will also not let Tibet gain indepence. No normal country gives away territory unless defeated. Therefore the only way out

WIKIPEDIA
Wikipedia was blocked by China as well, but now it isn't anymore. Well the Chinese version is blocked, but other languages are enabled. This has probably have to do with the fact that educated people are less likely to fall for brainwashing and propaganda and the western media is full of bias and innaccuracy towards "certain" countries. Wikipedia has been unblocked, Newgrounds can be unblocked as well!

MILLIONS OF POTENTIAL NEWGROUNDERS
Almost 1.3 billion people live in China and although there is a small proportion of internet users. this still amounts to 100.000.000 internet users. It would be good idea to expand the exposure into China once again.

POST SCRIPTUM
If you are interested in unblocking newgrounds in China you better contact me via e-mail or MSN. But it will be important that you will cooperate with Chinese authorities. Most likely pornographic and violent content will remain blocked and some words will be filtered to block access.

My MSN is: bai.long@hotmail.com
