Hi there! In case you didn't know, I created newgrounds. No, it wasn't made by some giant company - just some dumb kid who now has help. I also co-founded the Behemoth; we made Alien Hominid and Castle Crashers. Icon by Pegosho, banner by OmenaKettu.

Stomach Stuff

Posted by TomFulp - December 4th, 2008

So for months now, I've been dealing with this bad stomach pain. I thought it was an ulcer brought on by the stress of Castle Crashers, but I got checked out and don't have an ulcer. Instead I have pre-ulcer conditions that could lead to an ulcer.

I first started taking Prevacid, for acid reflux. It helped with some of the reflux symptoms but I still had regular stomach pains, waking up every morning with stomach pain and having regular pains at times throughout the day. I was diagnosed with having a spastic stomach and given Metoclopramide, a "potent dopamine receptor antagonist." This actually worked and my symptoms pretty much went away, but the side effect was that I was a lot more tired and became totally unmotivated. I actually started falling asleep on the couch at night in front of the TV, which I never do - I usually have to force myself to bed. I was also more tired in the morning, although I always hate mornings... But I think it really was making me get DEPRESSED.

The one month of pills ran out and I've shifted back to being more alert and awake, but the stomach pain is back. I don't know if another month could solve things once and for all, or what. In the meantime, I've been trying to fix up my diet... I'm drinking tea instead of coffee and trying not to eat too much in one sitting. The really troublesome part is that beer doesn't sit very well... I wanna kick this before the UK Meetup so I can drink like a champ, but I have a bad feeling I'm gonna be nursing bottles sloooooowly. So anyway this is a heads up.

May 2022 Update: It turns out Metoclopramide crosses the blood brain barrier, which was the problem there. I actually took a medicine for months after this that wasn't supposed to cross the blood brain barrier but it made me really lethargic and it was later discovered that it DOES cross the blood brain barrier and I recall it was discontinued... But I don't remember the name right now, probably because it made me a hazy mess during that period.

I ultimately got an upper endoscopy and was diagnosed with an incompetent esophageal sphincter and a hiatal hernia. Basically my esophagus no longer opened and closed and my stomach had worked its way up in there. Nowadays I take Prevacid and Dicyclomine, which do a decent job with my stomach issues.

:(

you push yourself too hard Tom, I think a couple weeks vacation is what you need.

Aww, hope you get well soon :(
Otherwise we'll come kidnap you in your sleep, and force you to make Newgrouns a better place >:O
No, seriously, hope you are okay, and hope you get it sorted out :)

Its a good thing you got it checked out that may have KILLED you if it got too bad believe me I know :(

You aren't alone man. I've been having stress induced stomach problems for something like a year and a half now. I won't go into details, but they wound up putting me on some pills that I can't remember what they were that didn't do a thing. I started using over the counter stuff which worked a million times better with no noticable side effects, but I still had flares. Watching my diet has helped me and I certainly hope it does the same for you. Nursing your beer a bit may not be the worst of ideas, and I'm sure you'll still have fun anyway.

Congrats on, after nine years, finally getting Civilian.

I love castle crashers and Alien hominid, Those are fun games XD. Heres hoping you get better soon Tom.

Maybe you should check with your Doctor/GP whether there are any alternatives to Metoclopramide.
Also, I'd agree with trying to stay off the alcohol according to the British Medical Association new guide to medicines and drugs "Alcohol - Avoid. Alcohol may oppose the beneficial effects and increase the sedative effects of this drug."
If you'd been drinking at the same time, that would explain the falling asleep at night in front of the tv.

btw, Castle Crashers is amazing. First Xbox Live game I brought ^_^.

Wow, that doesn't sound too pleasant. You should probably also try to avoid spicy food, lots of vinegar and stuff like that. Alcohol most probably isn't the best idea, either, but I can't imagine why the doctor didn't give you any more solutions other than semi-working pills with a textbook of side-effects.

Consider asking another doctor for advice, I had similar problems, and it can really get ugly if it isn't properly taken care of.

then just drink slooooooowly

Just get a lotta drugs kay?

Hopefully your stomach gets better.

Tom, I think you have what my dad has.
He had bad stomach pains for a time and it could lead to some cancer shit, but now he is eating only certain foods that dont fuck with his acid reflex and has had a few surgeries, and he is starting to feel better.
WHAT TO EAT:
on pizza go with hamburger or mushroom.
cheeseburgers are fine.
pasta is fine.
well, thats a pretty decent diet, right? lol

oh yeah, and no spicy food. STAY AWAY!

stomach ulcers are not made by stress it is actually by a virus
couple of australian doctors found out about it
I swear it is true

When is the UK Meetup Tom, and do I have to be +18? Unless I can get home on my own before the drink starts flowing.

I know I don't have the same thing you have, but I have similar symptoms when I wake up in the morning. I feel like I'm going to vomit for an hour, give or take 30 minutes, and then I'm fine. It really all depends on how bad the stomach pain is. Is it highly painful, a distraction, or just an annoyance?

If possible, maybe only take half the daily recommended amount of pills so you're not as tired, and it just takes away from some of the pain, but not completely.

Also check out your diet. I hate mornings as well, and I used to skip out on breakfast a lot. Now, if I don't eat in the morning, I'll feel like I'm going to throw up for a long period of time.

Wish I could see you in the UK! Either way, hope you all have a great time! :D

Ouch. My mother-in-law has some serious ulcers from HER mother-in-law living at the house with them. She just keeps getting them because of stress levels. When grandma goes away, the ulcers go away. You should talk to your doctor and even see another doctor if your insurance lets you to get a second opinion. Sometimes the typical treatment isn't enough and there's other options that your doctor may not be familiar with.

and beer isn't so great anyway >.<

It's pretty serious. Pepper mint tea and hypericum tea should deal with the stomach pain. Coffee won't hurt you just remember not to drink it on empty stomach. Most of all you should rest and sleep more. Don't drink too much vodka!

Drink bleach AND ammonia. lul.
But seriously, go eat basic stuff, with the PH over 7, preferably 8.
