Hi there! In case you didn't know, I created newgrounds. No, it wasn't made by some giant company - just some dumb kid. I also co-founded the Behemoth; we made Alien Hominid and Castle Crashers. Yoink!

Projects

Posted by TomFulp Sep. 7, 2007 @ 11:21 AM EDT

Abner came by last night for a progress-check on the upcoming NG store overhaul. Oldschool NG fans may remember Abner as the guy who created the original Shotgun Man sketch for Assassin.

Funny side story... Back in college, Abner and I had started work on a Shotgun Man cartoon, which was to become a series on NG. Each episode revolved around Shotgun Man getting angry in routine everyday situations, the result being a massive bloodbath. Abner drew characters and backgrounds on paper and I "inked and colored" (yeah, traced) them in Flash. We never finished an episode, though. It's a shame, it would have been great.

Since the days when we were college roommates, Abner took an interest in programming, namely, the same sort of programming Ross and liljim do. We figured that since a store system wouldn't tie in much with the rest of NG, it would be a good opportunity to throw a third programmer into the mix.

Progress is coming along well! It's hard to say how far we are from launch (just assume it will never launch - then we can't disappoint you), but I'm excited with how far it has already come.

I'm scrambling to get Castle Crashers done, so that's pretty much gonna be my life story for the coming months. What can I say, console games are BIG projects... Too big.

General team status check...

Ross - finishing up the new system for viewing individual user reviews, as well as new review mod tools.
liljim - working on the post-redesign multi-author system.
Jeff - in the final stretch (?) of Tankmen 2.
Stamper - prepping product shots for the store and a million other oppressive odd jobs
MindChamber - working on Pixel Puncher art and starting an epic cartoon
Tim - setting up secure server for store, trying to solve our AOL problem for <= $2000 a month
Mike - working on Castle Crashers on-line multiplayer (with Josh from Team Behemoth) and BSP code

The AOL problem is that AOL isn't giving Cogent (our bandwidth provider) proper access to their users... So NG runs INSANELY SLOW for AOL users. I wish I could tell everyone to just STOP USING AOL because it's a piece of shit scam of an ISP, but unfortunately a lot of people want to keep using it, so we have to pay a ton of money to set up an alternate high bandwidth route for AOL users.

Ok back to work.

Sep. 7, 2007 | 12:20 PM RupeeClock says:

That's bullshit that you should have to pay more money to let AOL users access the site, that's entirely AOL's problem for providing a poor service.

Great to see so many people working on NG now, let's hope Ross can finish the review tweaks soon, these Teddy reviews are getting out of hand.

I wonder what'll happen to the store? :3

Sweet! Any idea when the new guy will be here?

Sep. 7, 2007 | 6:05 PM newgiez says:

AOL sucks, nobody should use AOL (ban users that use AOL, LOL!) Also tom, you haven't been replying to any of my PM's I'm just guessing that your pilled with work. Se you around!

Sep. 7, 2007 | 7:31 PM SlashFirestorm says:

Bless you for calling AOL what it is.

Can't wait to see the review system up and running...there's a lot of spam that needs to be taken care of, so those poor review mods are gonna be busy, heh.

Sep. 7, 2007 | 8:07 PM Sonucais says:

Call me ignorant if you want, but I unknown much about Xbox360 and that Live thing. I would like to know if Castle Crashers will be relased for Nintendo Wii (Europe). Good luck with the site updates and the game because I'm loving it for the videos and pics already.

Sep. 7, 2007 | 8:35 PM Reyals says:

I can't imagine anyway using AOL anyway, but I suppose there's at least some, so that sucks.

Also, why don't you return my calls?

The "General team status check" seems quite uplifting, though the fact that there is no mention of when is , well, just the opposite.

I'd say I can't wait to see the new store, but I'm dirt poor.

Sep. 8, 2007 | 12:06 AM W-A-C says:

What percentage of the NG users use AOL's browser?

Sep. 8, 2007 | 1:57 AM Total-Havok says:

Tom, I miss the assassin guy, you wouldn't happen to still have the .swf or .fla of the original assassin, would you? :( I've been on NG a long time, which I know I shouldn't have, but back in '00 the assassin page and front page were fun. :)
Also, post more about how you and April are. :)

Sep. 8, 2007 | 5:16 AM seruvath says:

Taking pictures of products? I hope its worth the salary NG pays him.
Id like to buy ng keychains, boxers, pens, and stuff like that. i hope the new store will have these goods on display.

Sep. 8, 2007 | 7:41 AM fat-barry says:

lol, the problem you had with shotgun man is almost exactly my problem, i can animate (sort of) but i can't draw for crap! and i think that it is pretty true that if you have some awsome graphics and artwork in a flash, people tend to forget about the animation. but it goes the complete opposite if your drawings are bad, (good animation + bad artwork = apperent bad flash) I have a good friend, on ng and in real life, who is very good at art. So i was wandering if it would be cheating if he drew and i animated? although, in your opinoin who would be doing the most work, as i don't want either of us to feel as if we're not pulling our own weight.

cheers,
Hazza-s

Sep. 8, 2007 | 10:21 AM MorrowDays says:

it would be cool if you had daily feature trophy teeshirts, or even better, weekly ones. you could print them all big and pixelly, it would be sick.

btw, I've been wondering for a while, whats in your userpage header? I cant see quite what it is.

Sep. 8, 2007 | 1:59 PM rockymike says:

I'm shocked just to discover that AOL is still in business. TimeWarner is just too damn stubborn.

Sep. 8, 2007 | 3:51 PM Wonchop says:

Castle Crashers is little by little tempting me to get an Xbox 360.

Sep. 8, 2007 | 5:22 PM KarpaL-TunnaL says:

I miss the shotgun man. I say you put him back on assassin page again!
I loved it when he shot that little pink thing. :( aww well.

Sep. 8, 2007 | 5:33 PM simon says:

Sep. 8, 2007 | 5:57 PM Sir-Nuts says:

I hope Ross finishes the reviews problem as soon as he can! Everyone in Rage's topic want that!

Sep. 8, 2007 | 7:49 PM Sunglasses says:

Shotgun Man kicked ass.

Think he might return to the assassin page anytime soon?

Sep. 8, 2007 | 8:41 PM Rudy says:

as soon as i move to uni my AOL problem will be fixed (that's assuming my accommodation doesn't use AOL too)
and i would love to see you pursue my parents to get rid of AOL, because they have stopped listening to me about it :( it seems to me if you dress your product up in a pretty design and give it a flashy TV advert anyone will buy it.

Sep. 9, 2007 | 2:07 PM HeRetiK says:

Holy shit, AOL actually started doing this? There goes net neutrality...
Greedy bastards.

Sep. 9, 2007 | 8:33 PM JoeWigger says:

Yeah, all of those sound pretty awesome (especially Tankmen 2), but where's Pico 2? I mean, I know you're busy and all, but it seems like its never going to get done. I'm not trying to bitch or get angry or anything, but at least provide people with an update for your progress so far.

Sep. 10, 2007 | 12:50 AM someguy789 says:

AOL... That sends a shiver down my soul.

Few years back I had the misfortune of putting up with them. The "service" was so crappy, but they kept reeling us back in with free months.

Sep. 10, 2007 | 2:22 AM Shauna says:

And sadly, I'm an AOL user. NOT BY CHOICE! I use IE or firefox to get around the insanely slow connection though. Still sucks that AOL blocks out some of your games and movies as 'scamming sites'. What bullshit.

Wait, is Castle Crashers for XBLA only? I ask because, quite frankly, I think you should work around alittle. WiiWare is gonna go up soon...

Sep. 11, 2007 | 5:00 PM ZekeySpaceyLizard says:

tom.
fuck the aol users.

set up a page so that everyone who uses AOL's shitty service gets a special flash page of a tankman mooning them, with the words "GET A BETTER ISP" flashing and a loud blaring foghorn noise.

aol also destroyed singingfish.com which was the best website in the world.

Sep. 11, 2007 | 6:55 PM dodo-man-1 says:

You're freekin' awesome, man. You created Newgrounds, AND you live about 50 miles away from me. That grants me "demigod" status :) If Newgrounds Street Fighter was a real game and not just a staff page, I'd totally play as you.

Sep. 11, 2007 | 9:37 PM supyohos123 says:

I use to have AOL until last year, so I'm happy.

Sep. 11, 2007 | 11:34 PM Infernalz says:

Sep. 14, 2007 | 9:21 PM chris-the-stick2 says:

i hope you will finish this soon, ok mang

Oct. 11, 2007 | 5:38 PM Mr-Money says:

Yup. It's a shame about AOL.

The "higher ups" in my household continue to think AOL is solid. I keep telling them you can switch ISPs and still keep your AOL e-mail addresses, but they can never be arsed to switch.

I should say that mine was running insanely slowly up to a few weeks ago. Now it works perfectly, so I assume you've fixed the prob.

God damn I hate AOL. They scammed people in years ago with their ISP plans, and now no one can be arsed to move to better providers.
