Hi there! In case you didn't know, I created newgrounds. No, it wasn't made by some giant company - just some dumb kid. I also co-founded the Behemoth; we made Alien Hominid and Castle Crashers. Yoink!

Devo

Posted by TomFulp Oct. 24, 2009 @ 8:01 AM EDT

Now that we're raising a kid, we find ourselves watching a lot of Yo Gabba Gabba, possibly the best kids' show ever. Some of the episodes have a segment in the tradition of Picture Pages where an artist shows kids how to draw stuff. What I never realized is the artist is Devo front man Mark Mothersbaugh!

I've always loved Devo but I never researched any of the band members until this morning. It turns out Mark has done a lot of music for kids' shows, including the Pee Wee's Playhouse theme song. He also scored all the Wes Anderson films, so when you watch Rushmore, Royal Tenenbaums or Life Aquatic, you're hearing a lot of Mark.

http://www.markmothersbaugh.com/

I'm officially adding Mark to my short list of awesome people.

That show is crazy. I've watched it many times just because I'm in awe of the things they do. They have the Aquabats make guest performances (which sound pretty similar to Devo), and they had the Ting Tings sing their happy birthday song:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=veN2gy CEj8s

When I turned 24 the other day, I listened to it about 5 times. Is it better than the real happy birthday song? Maybe so.

OMG!!!!!!!

He help make music for "JAK II"

Dude! I would've never thought someone from way back would have such an influence on the things on TV I have become so familiar with today.

===

I've seen a few episodes of Yo Gabba Gabba when I babysat my little cousins.

My first impression was...."Da hell?"

Cause some of the songs are just so..."weird"

I mean...have you really ever listened to them?

"Party in my Tummy" - I suppose it's to encourage good appetite.
"Don't Bite Your Friends" D8> da hell? I never bit my friends.
"Noodles are fun fun fun" - yes....yes they are.

But that's because I believe it is heavily Japanese inspired.
In some episodes I've noticed things like 'Daruma-Dolls' and 'Gundam-like-Robots'.

When I was little, they used to have shows like that on "Kiku TV" a Japanese broadcasting station made just for Hawaii.

Had all the same kind of stuff, puppets, singing, dancing....

But they would sing stuff like..."cookies' and milk' or 'what did we learn in school today'.

But now that it's in english, I question the effect on kids.

But so far, my cousins show no real sign of 'disturbance'. I guess I'm the only one 'disturbed.'

---Where Yo Gabba Gabba was inspired from----

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UsXBGB 6n8HM - similar no?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iVVvUS C5pv4 - this one I remember.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PohiLt ZodiY - oh god, I remember this, where's your head, where's your tummy...

You should like....make a Flash for your kid.

Something like those old Japanese kid's show.

Or maybe a spoof.

Oct. 24, 2009 | 1:44 PM Ukinojoe says:

fuckin Rugrats man

The music isall like BAAAW BAAAWW

Oct. 24, 2009 | 1:55 PM JakBaronKing says:

Here is an example of another Japanese puppet inspired music video.

Dude....remember 'Captain Underpants'?

well...back then they commissioned a Japanese artist to do a few music videos for the book series.

I still crack up when I watch it.

'Shaking Hands' - look for the gorilla
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbGuLh W0zVU

You could 'totally' do something like this.

Even with real puppets. You guys never did puppet shows before. It might be an interesting challenge!

Oct. 24, 2009 | 1:59 PM TeknoMaX says:

Devo has also done music for games, like Interstate '82...
It's really cool when serious artist or professionals do good stuff for kids, not just the typical everyday crap...
For example, I look with different eyes that show, Lazy Town, after reading about his creator and the actor behind Sportacus, Magnus Schieving who also happens to be the atlet with the biggest common sense I've seen in my entire life...

I didn't know you had a kid Tom, my big congratulations to you :)

Foot fetishism, foot partialism, foot worship, or podophilia is a pronounced sexual interest in feet. It is the most common form of sexual preference for otherwise non-sexual objects or body parts.
Foot fetish has been defined as a pronounced sexual interest in the feet or footwear. Freud considered foot binding as a form of fetishism. For a foot fetishist, points of attraction include the shape and size of the foot and toes (e.g. long toes, short toes, pointed toes, high arches, slender soles, fat toes, long toenails, short toenails, small feet, toenail color), jewelry, toe rings, ankle bracelets, treatments e.g. French pedicure, state of dress (e.g. barefoot, flip flops, or clad in socks or nylons), odor, and any form of sensory interaction, e.g. licking, kissing, sucking, tickling, person giving foot jobs, pedal pumping or trampling/stomping. Foot job is known as a type of sexual activity with feet.
