Tom's right. You can copy Newground's "engine" quite easily. In fact, if you think about it, Newgrounds is just a web content portal that specializes in flash content, mp3's and bulletin board forums. Anyone with a CS degree could probably think up their own version and implement it successfully, or jerry-rig a content management system to do the same.

However, Newgrounds is much more than an interactive database. It's a online community. The sheer size of the NG community is almost staggering if you think about it. It has maintained an Alexa rating of 420/millions for quite a long while. Hundreds if not thousands of prominent artists and developers (like myself) use NG as a means of networking, gaining somewhat accurate public feedback, testing new ideas, and just plain enjoying flash development. It's taken over a decade to get as prominent and successful as it has, and that's something you can't get for a $1000 code job.

There are only two sites that people will EVER go to if they're a flash animator and are serious about getting exposure. Those are Newgrounds and AlbinoBlackSheep - and both are entirely different.

A lot of people are saying that you should sue these people... I'm confused. If no one could make another site like NG, wouldn't that mean you'd have a monopoly? And aren't monopolies illegal? How similar is this new site that suing is an option? I'd think that if they'd just copied an pasted all the NG code into their site, maybe that might be sue-worthy. Hopefully they won't help him. I agree with what that guy said about "shitheads with cash." I've been looking for writing jobs lately, and everyone wants writers, but nobody wants to pay for them. It seems as if, if people accepted jobs like that, the programming field would be cheapened in the same manner that the writing field has. And who would profit? Some skillless shithead who got rich paying you next to nothing.

At the same time, I wouldn't feel too threatened by this guy. You have brand-name recognition. It's hard for artists to spread the word about themselves. I, for one, am not going to waste my time building a name for myself on some new site that no one has ever heard of after I've working to make a name for myself here for all these years.
