Hi there! In case you didn't know, I created newgrounds. No, it wasn't made by some giant company - just some dumb kid who now has help. I also co-founded the Behemoth; we made Alien Hominid and Castle Crashers. Icon by Pegosho, banner by OmenaKettu.

There are a growing number of accounts that frequently submit games... I won't call them shitty games but they are cookie cutter games that appear to just keep rolling off an assembly line. The creators are either opportunists who employ third world labor, or developers who are swapping out some graphics and exerting minimal effort to submit as many games as possible.

Now, we've always been pretty lax about SPAM and we let you guys attempt to BLAM or PROTECT it... A lot of these games manage to make it through with reasonable scores in the 2.5-3.0 range and I guess some people are enjoying them. Many of them are somewhat decent, they just happen to be re-used over and over with new themes.

Do you think games like this should just continue to exist and pile up on NG? Or should we some day face a COOKIE CUTTER GAME APOCALYPSE where they all get mass-blammed?

I also am weary of the growing trend of games where you don't know who really made it. We don't allow you to submit a "stolen" game that someone else made, but we do let companies submit games that were produced by their staff, or developers they sponsored. Stuff like this likely won't be deleted, but as the amount of submissions on NG grows, I will continue to tighten the focus on games that were made by recognizable individuals. So keep that in mind when it comes to assigning credits.

It seems to me like with these cookie cutter games, when the next one comes out the previous ones wil be almost immediately forgotten. There really isn't any sense to keeping around any of those games that are under/not performing, for any party. Maybe not a mass apocalypse per-say, but a certain set of standards can't hurt.

APOCALYPSE (mechanical ice one)

just keep working on systems, automated or manually controlled, that helps out promoting NG-related content, and/or content by - like you say - recognizable individuals.

Perhaps more guidlines of "how to vote" could be good too. In the end I think that portal-moderators should have a little more power and be able to help out with such things. Just make sure that the options aren't destructive, i.e. a rollback-option that admins can use in case some mod goes haywire. It happens... :3

btw, if you're going for the APOCALYPSE NOWWWWW option, please make sure the BBS gets it good too. Thank you! ^________________^

And basically you say; "dammit we are running out of space and you should keep your crap games out of my site. Im paying for it."

I vote for apocalypse, with the option to pre-delete the games. Tell all the people submitting same game over and over to delete the clone games.
If they don't, force it (leave the cute games be)

To be honest I don't mind these games too much. It's not like they are talking too much server space or consuming high amounts of bandwidth. If you started removing such games, then you might have users cry for removing other flash like KK, Star Syndicate submissions or even cookie cutter sprite movies. It'll just open Pandora's box, so to speak.

The only real issue that I might have about them is them dancing around the two submission per day limit. I think it might be best if you just said to them, that they can upload their games but stop with all the accounts they use to submit them with especially the 123XXX and game2XXXX accounts.

I tend to agree with Psychogoldfish. As rubbish as the games are, from what I remember is that you always wanted NG to be like the card catalogue of the Flash universe. Where if it was good enough to pass judgment then its good enough to dwell in the catacombs. I think its kinda lame that these types of accounts / robots/ exist but if people do want them to stay, and i guess they must if they manage to let them pass judgement then it is what it is.

I think as long as the site continues to promote and push originality in the things it pushes on the frontpage and raves about, then we can live with the bottom feeders of trash games. I mean i think at most these games gather about 2-3000 views so i dont really feel like its taking away from anyone else, they rarely even make a blip on the screen and its just whatever.

I would want them gone, but at the same time, i feel like newgrounds' responsibility as a portal is to leave that to the people that vote on stuff and just keep it if thats how the cards roll. Maybe itd be cool to make a 'disposable games' collection.

Ahpockylips, ftw.

Make it like this: If the game doesn't fill the max file size, or around the max size, it shouldn't be posted. Gives plenty of cookie cutters to shit all their ideas into one game.

Also, if you actually let the games stay, we'll have to live with (insert shitty game here) on the front page for weeks until another (insert shitty game here) shows up and outdoes it. Which is mostly always the case, because everyone likes zombies, and blood, and tits. Games on NG are getting too generic. I don't want another "Kill a zombie and upgrade your weapons" game. I don't want another "throw something somewhere and see how far it goes and earn money so that you can upgrade your throwing device" game (although Flight was quite awesome).

I want a game that has a compelling story, that has interesting characters, great music, and even greater animation. Something like Sonny, it had a great story, still had zombies, but was awesome nonetheless. Also, I don't want anymore (insert shape here) 'n' (insert shape here) animations. They're bland and definitely have no hard work put into them.

I do agree that a lot of the game submissions have been lacking lately. I dunno if other sites are just gobbling up everything as exclusives or what, or maybe it's just this time of year.

If the problem grows why keep shitty mimic games. Just holocaust them.

i dunno i think the idea of just nuking these clone games kinda goes against the idea of NG in the first place. plus at least the front page system is run by a few people rather than mass votes or an automated system, so its not like they get much coverage outside their initial release

maybe the quality control could be tightened in some way or you could make some more explicit guidelines for game submissions - kinda like how you've started pushing audio portal music forward and encouraging people to stop using commercial songs in their videos

Apocalypse!

NG is made for our community to showcase their work, right? Corporations are certainly not a part of the community!

Spam is not what it used to be, So I'm all for raising the bar on the score, cause seriously a flash that would have blammed in 06 is passing with 2.00 now. Ive always been happy that newgrounds has had quality control. But its really not the case anymore. Like you said these shitty 3rd party sites are making games that have no intention to improve or develop, are submitting shit JUST to make ad money. Personally I hope the staff builds up the stomach to just delete the accounts even though they haven't broken any rules.

Newgrounds is a community of developers, not a dump site for shit games. It kills me to see what the portal has become really, it used to be this magical place where anything you clicked on was a gold mine. Now I feel I need to sift through shit to find something good, Honestly I dont even bother clicking on games in the portal unless they have a score of over 4.

But my MAIN reason that I agree for the passing score being raised is because people can get literally nothing to pass, (Hellan Keller's Life Story) I mean YES newgrounds does value some of these shitty flashes with no effort another example B. But really how often do shitty gems come along anymore... Not often.

We'd loose the novilty of having bad flashes that for some strange reason they appeal to us, but at the same time we will gain so much more, and you will see people improving that you want to see improve, and the crap people with no intention to make anything astounding will quit and face reality (kinda harsh, but this isn't deviant art) WERE FUCKING NEWGROUNDS!

I vote apocalypse. Remove every game with a score below 2.50 or at least 2.00.
I also suggest increasing the minimum score required for a submission to pass. Although this would make it slightly harder for a newbie game designer to submit an entry to Newgrounds, it would serve as a reason for him to practice and improve his skills or pick a specialty (art/code/music) and collaborate with other users to produce a higher quality game. Even though Newground's motto is "Everything by Everyone", it has made me sad seeing people submitting entries with no effort put into it into the portal. I also suggest implementing a better organizing and browsing system: make it easier to submit an entry into a collection or genre page (the latest game submitted to the Driving page was made in 2009 and Road of the Dead isn't even in there), allow users to browse games by other different genres (Platformer, RPG, RTS, etc.) and allow them to filter/organize by score and date added. This would allow users to find games that went under their radar and that would have been lost forever. I'm not sure if the NG servers would be able to catalog all the entries and allow hundreds of user to simultaneously filter, organize and browse all the entries existent. You would probably have to add a browsing limit of about 1000 entries per hour for example. Sorry for the long post and for getting slightly off-topic.

I have been horrible about updating the game and movie collections ever since we started tracking genres and tags in 2008... It's just that the system that lets you sort by that data is part of the upcoming redesign, so it's just been lurking in the shadows... waiting... to kick the shit out of everyones' faces.

I think an apocalypse would do this site some good.

Cookie cutter games would've been great

ten years ago

Blam those pieces of crap

LET THE APOCALYPSE BEGIN!!!!

Perhaps you could create a system that raises the score required to escape blaming after a certain amount of games have been posted within a specific time period, it probably wouldn't disturb most of the individual developers and it would make the spam developers have to space their releases a bit.

Of course, you would have to do something about the same person creating multiple accounts for it to really work and I haven't the slightest idea of how to do that.
