Hi there! In case you didn't know, I created newgrounds. No, it wasn't made by some giant company - just some dumb kid who now has help. I also co-founded the Behemoth; we made Alien Hominid and Castle Crashers. Icon by Pegosho, banner by OmenaKettu.

Neo Geo Geekdom

Posted by TomFulp - November 27th, 2007

Man, I thought -I- was a huge Neo Geo geek, but tonight I stumbled across something so geeky, even I felt uncomfortable looking at it. I was searching for pics of the bulldog SNK used in some Neo Geo promo materials (to share with Jose) when I stumbled across this: Neo Geo Bits & Goofs.

It's the sort of shit that only a diehard Neo fan could ejoy, and even then... It's a bit creepy.

The site is cool, though. It is the only place I found with scans of old Neo Geo ads as well as strange projects, such as creating a home cartridge and packaging for a game that had only been released for the arcade MVS system.

I feel so pedestrian.

It turns out that no matter what, someone is always more die-hard than you are :)

omg, that is geeky!

I know Newgrounds was named after Neo Geo, but what is Neo Geo?

The Neo Geo was a 24-bit game system that played the same set of games at home and at the arcade. Owning a Neo Geo was like having an arcade in your house, so getting a new Neo Geo game had this special magic to it that you couldn't get from the Genesis or SNES. As a result, there's a diehard legion of Neo Geo fanatics, who still yearn for that magic today.

I always feel spoiled that I had a Neo Geo, but it was a goal I had set and I eventually got one used for less than what people pay for a PS3 today. The games were expensive ($200 list price), but I always found ways to get them. There was a phone-in mail order distributor called Telesaurus that sold games for $160. I ran the "Neo Geo Alliance" on Prodigy (a pre-web dial-up service), and negotiated a club rate of $140 per game - so NGA members could get all their games for $140. It still made each game feel like a big mission to obtain - but it was always worth it because of that MAGIC when the game arrived. My friends and I used to play Samurai Shodown 2 for hours while listening to German industrial music, and it just felt like the coolest thing ever.

The club on Prodigy also led to some great tips... Such as this on CompUSA that was shutting down and selling all their Neo Geo games for $50 each, with a buy 2 get one free deal... I ended up getting six games shipped to me for $200. It was an obsession.

Wow that's pretty crazy. That person must love Neo Geo.

Those ads just make my jaw cringe.

Hahaha that's awesome. I never knew much about the Neo Geo, I was a bit too young and only knew Nintendo, as it was what I was handed as a baby. Some of those ads.... ha. Cheesie babies with speech bubbles, and super massive hot dogs. See... if I had seen those ads back then I might have swung your way. There's a goldmine of stuff there. I love the crazy Japanese style... much more Japaneses than an Italian plumber and dinosaurs ;P

As long as you had to blow into the cartridge before shoving it in, fun time is guaranteed. However I do not know if this is the case... but my hotdog is looking pretty wimpy right about now :(

u silly boy.

Tom i sended you a PM but i can understand if your too busy to reply
but uhmm i kinda need help =/ .. soo just check your inbox and i`d be
happy! XD

Wow, in a way creating his own cartridge version for his Neo was pretty cool.

Yeah, it's actually totally awesome. :)

Dammed !! U right Bro... its awsome

i dunno why the neo geo didn't fly in the states. there's nothing quite as cool as seeing a neo geo arcade machine in a back corner at a pizza place. can't ask for more than puzzle bobble, blazing star and metal slug in the same box for a quarter a piece.

sites like this are fun to go through, too. it's fascinating how much these gurus get into specific kinds of electronics. i wonder if there's someone who made a super-detailed fansite for something like the wonderswan or virtual boy. actually i don't even know why i'm asking. there has to be one out there. geocities here i come

We've been tinkering with a side-project site to cover obscure 2D games, but it's just for fun and we're conflicted with whether it would become too much of a distraction or not.

I get worked up because we play all these fun classic arcade games, and every one of them could be made in Flash... Flash 6 for that matter... But no one is making web games of that calibur (not that it's an easy task). Then I get mad at myself because my hands have been tied by Castle Crashers for a few years now and I keep asking myself "WHAT IF"... Wondering what web games I would have made in the past few years if I hadn't had so many other obligations... But then I remind myself that when CC is finally done, I'll be glad I had "dared to dream big."

I'm really excited to make more web games some day. I want people to stumble across them and be like "woah where the hell did this come from?!"

why did yall neo geo use dawgs as the icon , or something?

I've actually thought about making a Flash sometime revolving around The King of Fighters sometime.

I say this because I know how much of a Neo Geo fan you are and figure that it's something that could get me front page if I ever got around to doing it ;) Besides, I don't think I've ever even seen a KoF Flash.

A KoF Flash would be cool, but I was a much bigger fan of Samurai Shodown. ;)

Geeky or not, it was still a brilliant system to use around in your own home.

Come to think of it, it was like an arcade in the house, but then again, we have loads of them now, the 360 and so on.

I just came.

Who has that much freaken time?!?!

That does scare me a little bit.

Wow. How ironic: the man who created Newgrounds and the auto-portal has been pwn'd. I don't know who to believe anymore.

um, cool. in a geeky way i guess.

*Makes a mental note about Samurai Shodown*
