Jogging

Posted by TomFulp Jul. 23, 2007 @ 11:31 AM EDT

Tim and I arrived in San Diego last night around midnight and had a quick meeting with John and Dan at the Behemoth office before packing it in at the hotel here in Little Italy. The air outside was cool, but the non-air conditioned hotel room still managed to be hot.

I wake up at 5:44am - partly due to excitement but also because it's 8:44am on the east coast, which is way past when I normally get up nowadays. I've been on a jogging kick lately, so I attach my iPod and go to it. I start my routine with a jog AWAY from downtown, towards the airport and the neighborhood under its noisy flight path. This is a redevelopment district, so it's always fun to see what pops up. There are a variety of art galleries and boutique shops that somehow manage to stay in business despite not having any customers or local foot traffic. I like to imagine the shop owners come in when they're tired of sitting by the pool. Rather than run a business to make a living, maybe they do it to make themselves more interesting at coctail parties. A few of the galleries from last year are vacant, but new ones have sprung up. It's dead silent this early in the morning.

My jog loops around towards the waterfront, back past the hotel and in the direction of downtown. Interpol's "Heinrich Maneuver" kicks in on my iPod with, "How are things on the west coast?", which seems appropriate, like I'm in a movie. I pass Broadway and the outdoor mall with Jamba Juice (my favorite quick morning stop in San Diego) but don't stop because I still have a good bit of jogging in me. I go to where downtown dead-ends into the convention center (aka Mecca) and jog up the trail towards the Omni Hotel, where I've stayed with April during two previous Comic-Cons (she used up all her vacation days on the honeymoon this year).

From there, I loop back around and weave through the Gaslamp district, looking for changes since last year. I'm devastated to find that Bassam, my favorite local coffee shop, is vacant and available for lease. It looks like the Starbucks across the street finally won. It wasn't enough that another Starbucks was two blocks away, they had to make sure Bassam didn't stand a chance. During the Alien Hominid crunch, I would make nightly trips to Bassam for their chai latte. Sometimes I would go to Borders and listen to CDs while sipping my chai, picking out new music to fill those lonely late-night coding sessions.

Jogging back towards the hotel, I finally stop at Jamba Juice for a wheat grass shot (for old time's sake) and protein smoothie. I try to jog with my smoothie but ended up walking most the way back. The streets are still really quiet this time of day, mostly just me and the people who keep the sidewalks clean. I was caught off-guard by the sound of pounding club music - apparently 4th and B had some all-night rave that was still going into the early morning hours.

Returning to Little Italy, I pass a new gelato spot and a place called Intelligent Design, but not in the Biblical sense. I toss my cup in the trash and do one last sprint for the hotel. I figure if I don't make a post about something this morning, I'll be too busy to do it later today. :)

Good to see you get some excercise after sitting infront of your computer for long periods of time. : )

Jul. 23, 2007 | 12:48 PM Gi-go says:

How far do you run Tom?

I love running, I run 8-12 miles a week.

Jul. 23, 2007 | 1:15 PM TomFulp responds:

I've been a horrible runner my whole life but I'm finally getting into the groove. It started with getting in shape for the wedding, but then I wanted to stay in shape so I would have more energy for all the stuff we're doing with NG and the Behemoth, which takes a lot of energy and creates a lot of stress (which running helps too). I'll jog 2-4 miles, several days per week... And I accept that it is likely a stage, but I've kept it up for a few months now.

Jul. 23, 2007 | 12:52 PM BlueHippo says:

Tom's keepin in shape, and trying to set a good example for Newgrounds ;) I used to run cross country in highschool, but haven't really done much exercise lately. I feel guilty about it, and want to get off my fat ass and do some running, but never seem to do it :( What a shame... I'm jealous that you're in Cali right now, but hopefully next year I'll be living in Cali, and will come hang out with you at next years comicon. I've wanted to go for a while now, but has never been able to. Well, be sure to keep in shape, so you have enough energy to make it through comicon, even if that means fueling yourself on caffeine!

Peace, Tom!

Jul. 23, 2007 | 1:16 PM TomFulp responds:

I'll try to be in even better shape next year. Maybe I'll look like my profile pic. :)

Because in the cartoon, 2 little boys upload a cartoon of you onto newgrounds where you're head flys around a dancing penis. after that everyone on newgrounds thinks you're gay and they come too your office and kill you, Don't get me wrong tom! I LOVE YOU! You're my hero! I was just wondering! Please Reply!

Go ahead and submit it!

Jul. 23, 2007 | 2:22 PM herblin says:

Lol tom, its good to see that even if you're old age you're trying too keep fit.
thats really good of you man, you will have to start being carefull or you will have to replace you're hip if it pops out, that would be painful.

Keep on keeping on but you cant avoid old age :-)
(you're almost 30)

Jul. 23, 2007 | 5:44 PM TomFulp responds:

Yeah girls chase after me while I'm running and they scream my name and stuff, but I'm just like "LOL sorry ladies" and I keep running.

no one knows who i am :(

GOD!! that ticks me off, I love coffee, so when i heard that starbucks run out another small business, sure starbucks is good, but its already taken over most of the little coffee stops in Washington. (missouri BTW) but anyway, i dont plan to go to comic con this year so if you could, post a news blog telling all about what happened and what's the lastest on the gaming industry.

P.S - wish April a happy b-day

Bye - connor1234 undescovered talent

That part with the shops and galleries was DEEP.

Jul. 23, 2007 | 5:20 PM Nogfish says:

I really like these userpages, it's fun to see what all the great "Newgrounds celebrities" are up to.

PREPARE FOR THE RISE OF THE STARBUCKS OVERLORD; the complete takeover of any and all things coffee.

Sounds like San Diego is good so far.

I really wish I could go this year :C

Jul. 23, 2007 | 5:51 PM MetalDart says:

Awesome. A good jog can just really help clear your mind sometime. I find it really funny that a rave was still going that early into the morning. I thought they'd be all raved out. o:

Can't wait to see the next episode of Tom's Jogging Adventures? Who knows, maybe there will be a celebrity guest appearance.

Jul. 23, 2007 | 5:56 PM killaforreala says:

I use to jog ever morning until I broke my leg on time!

Jul. 23, 2007 | 7:23 PM TomFulp responds:

Well at least you weren't late.

Jul. 23, 2007 | 6:45 PM Gobi says:

hmm - seems I cant reply to your reply to my comment .. how odd. Anyway, I bet they do , tom , i bet they do .

( have you gotten my pm btw (: )

Jul. 23, 2007 | 7:25 PM TomFulp responds:

Yeah, it's a tough decision as to where PMs end and forums begin. Or if some day it will just all become one system to rule them all (doubt it).

I have been working on catching up on PMs... Just have around 600 to go.

Jul. 23, 2007 | 7:13 PM WarSyndicate says:

Does it sometimes even freak you out when the proper song of the moment pops on the iPod. It's like, what did Steve Jobs and Jonathan Ives put in the little thing? iFreakedout

How often do you bump into people who will recognize in the real world?

Jul. 23, 2007 | 7:27 PM TomFulp responds:

People will comment on the NG shirt because they know the logo and the site, but actual sightings from people who recognize my face are pretty rare... Maybe once or twice a year. Having an illustrated avatar isn't gonna help much in the future.

Jul. 23, 2007 | 7:36 PM The-word-destroyer says:

Yeah man i used to always jog but i stopped after a while. We have a jamba juice next to my school at lunch me and 2 of my friends always go to it and get like 8-10 of them for al our friends.

And i cant stand he wheat grass shot. Tried it never again

Jul. 23, 2007 | 7:47 PM Gobi says:

600? crap , i knew itd be flooded but that's impressive. I also tried your email box but Im sure that's no different. The joys of being famous, eh

And besides, why are you internetting it up when it's April's birthday or something , right? right??

Jul. 23, 2007 | 9:59 PM TomFulp responds:

Well that's how big of a dick I am... Today is April's birthday, but she's back home and I'm in San Diego. We celebrated her bday on Saturday, though, but I still feel like crap.

Jul. 23, 2007 | 7:58 PM Naois says:

Are you sure the song by Interpol wasn't "Heinrich Maneuver", who's first lyrics are "How are things on the west coast"?

Jul. 23, 2007 | 10:00 PM TomFulp responds:

Yeah that IS the song, but I have it on an iPod shuffle so I haven't seen the name since I downloaded it. Whooooops. I'm gonna update my post now.

Tom, are you aiming to become as fit as your avatar? :)

Jul. 23, 2007 | 10:02 PM TomFulp responds:

Yes.

Jul. 23, 2007 | 9:38 PM condawg says:

Maybe I'll start getting up and jogging...
I need to stay more active.
I stay in my room all hours of the day, programming and doing... newgrounds shit... So jogging maybe once a week in the morning wouldn't be bad.
Maybe bring the dog with me...
She needs the exercise.
And Tom, you said "no one knows who i am :( ," but man, if I was to see you jogging I would be like "Holy shit! Tom!"
And you'd be like "Hey, fuck you, kid! Stop humping my-- ahh, fuck, that feels fiiine"
And we'd live happily ever after.

We'd have to rub April out, of course.

Jul. 24, 2007 | 1:58 AM mongoid says:

Aw man! Bassam closed? That sucks! I liked that place.

It feels good to hear someone else describe downtown. I've watched that place blossom from the real shit hole it used to be back in the early 90's. Now, I'd kill to live there, right up on the hill, maybe on the outskirts of Balboa park. I miss San Diego.

:-(

Wow, Tom Does Exercise, I Never Really Thought About It, But That's Good.
I Play Football To Keep In Shape, My Teams Pretty Good, And I Normally Jog Across Town, But I Stopped For Summer Break.

Jul. 26, 2007 | 3:28 PM ItGoesSplat says:

It's always a good thing to jog, are you training for something? Or are you just jogging for the hell of it?

Jul. 28, 2007 | 11:22 AM Potempkin says:

Jogging 2-4 miles, seven days a week, and in a few months time, then you really will look like your profile picture! You could also get an Alien Hominid cuddly toy or something to put on your shoulder so you would look just like your profile pic down to the last detail.

Jul. 31, 2007 | 7:12 PM ripoffhitman says:

Ah, I was never a fan of jogging really, every time I went for a mile it would just beat me down, but then I started biking like 20 miles a day, which actually for the 2 hours of exercise doesn't feel to bad. It must be funny like you said, the amount of people running after you and asking for your autograph or a picture. Well good stayin in shape, the differences add up, like they say, you can exercise and be in pain, or not exercise get fat have no girlfriend be hated by everyone made fun of, the town nerd low self confisence and a agony of stomach hunger more painful from that of actually doing the exercise, :)

Aug. 18, 2007 | 3:56 AM ageofthoughts says:

now its no wonder. is that pic of you from that day? :P ha. but nice work. i cant jog but for a block....yeah sad.
