I've actually spent a long time forcing myself not to use chat-speak. I think "lol" is still clinging on, but that's slowly being superceded by "Haha." I actually find a purpose for emoticons since chat and email are a little ambiguous when it comes to conveying emotional context. It's easy to offend people who don't know that you're just joking around, but throw a ;-P in there and no one gets their toes stepped on.

What's sad is that some of my fellow students (the younger ones more often) use chat-speak in real world contexts. I've had to cross out chat acronyms in term papers and group projects. I even hear them SAY "o-m-g".

It all makes me LOL out loud.

Replying to you saying that internet lingo has ended up in papers at school i can agree to that. I use chat like that far to much and ended up writing almost an entire paragraph using internet spelling and finishing with tons of acronyms in the conclusion of my paper. I didnt turn it in once i realized what i had done but still. Also i can't stand emoticons i really hate them it always bugs me when i put in :) and see a different face its why ive started using others such as :] to get around it.
