Hi there! In case you didn't know, I created newgrounds. No, it wasn't made by some giant company - just some dumb kid. Yoink!

TomFulp

Finally, a place to call home!

Posted by TomFulp Jul. 16, 2007 @ 9:13 PM EDT

By now you might be noticing something a little confusing: I still make "front page news posts" in the form of traditional forum posts, but I'm posting additional news here on my personal page, as well! I was a bit conflicted with this concept at first, but it's actually really cool.

You see, over the years my role within Newgrounds has sort of changed. The front page space didn't really feel like a place for me to discuss my own day to day thoughts and ideas, and I basically became a mouthpiece for the site and not for myself. Now, I have my own place, where I can complain about stupid shit whenever I want. Expect the front page posts to remain very NG community-centric (with the occasional plugs for my console projects, such as Alien Hominid and Castle Crashers), while tomfulp.newgrounds.com will be much more Tom-centric... More of a behind the scenes of day to day life at NG and beyond.

The user pages are also one more step towards a more "total Democratization" of Newgrounds. One of my big goals has always been for everyone to be able to use the site the same way I do. For example, I once would build pages for each of my games and give them a special showcase spot on the front page, but now I just submit them to the Portal and they are promoted in the same way as any other Portal submission. OK, maybe I leave them on the front page extra long... Life's not always fair. :)

User pages are an extension of that same mentallity. I didn't like the way the old front page affiliate posting system worked; it excluded a lot of people who deserved front page posting access, but I couldn't possibly give it to everyone because official site news would always be getting bumped off the front page. Now, EVERYONE who contributes to the site (in the form of Flash or music) has the ability to post news to the front page, albeit in a space below the official site news. Everything has been brought up alongside the content submissions, so now people don't have to scroll all the way down to find it.

As new features are introduced to user pages over time, I hope to see more people running their own "Newgrounds within Newgrounds"... Where they cultivate their own environment of news and content (not just their own submissions). Essentially, every user page on Newgrounds should have the potential to emulate the traditional Newgrounds front page, but with control in the hands of the user who maintains it.

My goal is that 20-30 years from now, when I'm an old man and no longer hip with the kids, I'll retire to tomfulp.newgrounds.com (where I will continue to post news and showcase my favorite submissions) and a democratically elected user will rise from the ranks to oversee the Newgrounds front page for as long as his term may last. Or maybe I'll just hand it over to my kids or someone from the staff, I can't make any promises there... It just seems like a cool idea. BYE!

i would make a post except i don't know what to write.

Glad to be one of the first to see this dream gettin' realized. I normally don't take a liking to blogs, but you guys have created a blog based around a game/cartoon environment, and in my eyes it totally redefines the experience. I love it.

Jul. 17, 2007 | 4:39 PM Frax says:

You and your team did a great job as always.

YAY !

Jul. 17, 2007 | 4:40 PM Zach says:

I can see these user pages being a great addition to NG, makes the site a lot more personal, and it's good to see the staff leading the way forward.

Also, the 'Leave it!' button is misleading, I thought it meant don't comment.

Tom, you are THE man :)
I really liked the redesign, it gives newgrounds a new, fresh and unique feeling, staying classic at the same time.

The personal pages are the best thing, now people can inform more easily about progress with their future projects.

Congrats to all the NG staff!

Jul. 17, 2007 | 5:31 PM Xeptic says:

Will take some time to get used to, but I'm loving it already.

Jul. 17, 2007 | 5:33 PM Krash17 says:

Ah, Tom! Love what you've done with the place, especially the ByteSize on the front page. Brings back old memories of when I first discovered the site, back in my dial-up days. I'm looking forward to working with the user page thing to see what I can come up with...Alright, that's enough ass-kissing for one day, keep up the good work!

Best Wishes,

A-Dizzle

Yoink!
I was a little skeptical about the user pages but it seems like a great addition for Newgrounds.

Jul. 17, 2007 | 6:11 PM Sonucais says:

When I thinked the site was awesome, actually I was wrong... Right now the site is awesome and this goes better and better as well! Good job to all you guys, this site is kickin' ass. I know there are problems at the site for now, but if I find some error (like I was experimented 2 months ago :0) I'll tell you via PM if it isn't a problem for you :)

Know what would be really awesome? Be able to subscribe to the userpages to check the updates. Anyway... good job! Pretty sure it will get all better (the website looks quite slow).

Jul. 17, 2007 | 6:11 PM rtil says:

i'm glad the userpages have taken such a drastic change. everything looks amazing. congrats to you an deveryone that took part in the redesign.

Jul. 17, 2007 | 6:16 PM TripleMercAlt says:

Sounds cool, but for god sakes, PLEASE put the voting and movie-viewing back the old way it was. I can't view any games or movies on Opera, and I don't want to use another browser, because frankly, I hate other browsers.

Jul. 17, 2007 | 10:22 PM TomFulp responds:

There is a link there to open the submission in a pop-up - check it out!

Jul. 17, 2007 | 6:21 PM DannyIsOnFire says:

So only people who submit flash/audio can get there posts on the front page?
Thats a little unfair on the rest of us loyal non-submitters :(

Jul. 17, 2007 | 10:22 PM TomFulp responds:

It's already giving access to too many people - the hope is that artists will make important news posts and lots of people will actually see them. Right now it's just sorta getting spammed, but I expected that for the launch. :)

Jul. 17, 2007 | 6:24 PM kormyen says:

Wow. Absolutly incredible work XD

I love the changes ^-^

Tom, 20-30 years from now, your daily struggle will be more centered around not soiling your underwear while on your AH mobilized wheelchair. If I have done my math correctly, you will then be a billion and twenty-nine years old.

Anywho, I'm certainly liking the user pages setup, and I'm glad there's still a place where I can view what's going on with the infamous Mr. Fulp.

Jul. 17, 2007 | 6:33 PM Sinitron says:

hi.

Jul. 17, 2007 | 6:35 PM TakeoutClock says:

You'll always stay hip, Tom.

Hopefully in more ways than one, seeing as your hip might not be so intact at old ages. ...Incidentally, I'm seriously jealous that your level is Tom Fulp.

Jul. 17, 2007 | 10:24 PM TomFulp responds:

You wouldn't believe how many PMs I get every week with people asking my why I don't have the top level icon... So that question will finally be put to rest. :)

Jul. 17, 2007 | 6:43 PM Kalandro says:

Compelling, and rich. Nice to see Newgrounds taking a big step towards Internet domination.

Respect.

Jul. 17, 2007 | 6:52 PM Xurch says:

A new exciting design is just what I needed to get back into newgrounds and making flash again. Thanks :)

Yay!

Jul. 17, 2007 | 7:00 PM Pokemon-Yellow says:

The pm system doesn't seem to be working, so I'll just leave you a comment.

Jul. 17, 2007 | 7:19 PM shadowchaotailsevil3 says:

I took advantage of this and made only 3 news pages so i only give updates happening within this site so ppl dont get confused.Have a good day Tom.I nay join the staff someday.Likely.

Jul. 17, 2007 | 7:22 PM Blueninja57 says:

Amazing job on the re-design Tom. It's good to see newgrounds with a new look.

Jul. 17, 2007 | 7:28 PM ZekeySpaceyLizard says:

I can't begin to imagine the cast amount of work getting this all together must have been. Cause <i>DAMN.</i>
It really looks sleek.
And not "web 2.0 shiney turd" sleek.

Jul. 17, 2007 | 10:28 PM TomFulp responds:

Yeah... The big goal was to make a layout that was clean and not too bulky, without looking like a vacant web 2.0 piece of shit.

Some people have already criticized the layout of being too graphic intensive, but it's actually pretty optimized... If you add up all the images of the sitewide general layout, I'm hoping it's still just around 100k (at least, that was the goal from the onset).

And after a 30 hour launch session, the beer hasn't come out of the fridge yet... Now it's the nightmare of fixing memory leaks, software hangs and other post-launch surprises!

Jul. 17, 2007 | 7:31 PM Evark says:

"I didn't like the way the old front page affiliate posting system worked; it excluded a lot of people who deserved front page posting access, but I couldn't possibly give it to everyone because official site news would always be getting bumped off the front page."

This all looks so amazing.
Claps to everyone involved.
Can't wait to see more of your ideas being implemented now that it'll be easier to add them to the site.

Congratulations Tom, you've made the best website on the internet. And one of the most important.

Jul. 17, 2007 | 8:43 PM TechFlash says:

I'm glad you feel it's a real breakthrough, Tom! I love it as well, I'm now able to inform my fans of my upcoming claymations right here on NG!

Mr. Fulp, this website is off the hook. The graphics of this website is super amazing. You and your team are indeed the best webmasters in the world. I like how the outlook of the website is metallic. Keep living the dream sir:)

Hey, movie viewing works on Opera now! Sweet!

In other business:
I need the password for the "Triple-Merc" account. I know you may not give it to me through PM, because you don't know whether the account is mine, but if you could email the password to triplemerc@gmail.com , that'd be great. Last time I checked, the recover password thing wasn't working.

Jul. 17, 2007 | 10:12 PM cicla says:

The improvement of the personal page is awesome and it gives the author more tools to promote their submissions and make a better experience to the public and to the author itself, like write walk troughs of their games, post news about upcoming projects and even ask people to beta-test their games and post the glitch's and bugs so you can read them later.

Jul. 17, 2007 | 10:17 PM StarF68 says:

Long live NewGrounds. :)

Great goal, great step towards such. Can't wait to see more personalized posts from you. :D

Jul. 17, 2007 | 10:17 PM AlexJS says:

Wonderful idea, Tom.

Although I'm still a bit irritated at the fact that you've hidden the Lv. 60 icon.

Jul. 17, 2007 | 10:27 PM Sawke says:

Tom you will always be hip with the kids.I'd actually like to know more about you. Favorite music, movies, books.

Jul. 17, 2007 | 10:31 PM TomFulp responds:

Funny you mention that, because we have expanded the "other favorites" to include stuff like books and video games. The form wasn't ready for launch, though, so it's grayed out.

Jul. 17, 2007 | 10:28 PM MegaGold says:

Oh Tom, pick me pick me, I'll gladly take over for you when I'm like 50.
Anyways I'll have to check you're profile more often. LoL you make yourself huge in your profile pic, not saying you aren't or anything.

Jul. 17, 2007 | 10:32 PM TomFulp responds:

JohnnyUtah made me huge, but I'm not complaining. I might replace that pic with a photograph later.

This is incredible, Tom. It certainly does look like Newgrounds has split inwardly into "Mini-Newgroundses". I like it, and hope everyone will take advantage and offer more of themselves into their profiles.

Could explain more about what the sharing is? You can submit this to other blogs like SlashDot and such? I'm not sure I understand...

Jul. 18, 2007 | 12:31 AM JarodMx says:

i like everything you've done here.

but whats with the smoking tankmen. is that your way of saying "newgrounds is still bad ass, despite being user friendly" ....kind of like fonsy(sp) ehhhhh!

Master... I bow down to you... Kudos on the new format!

Jul. 18, 2007 | 12:32 AM Weirdo says:

Very great layout Tom! I have never seen Newgrounds run so fast! I'm glad it's CSS valid. I also LOVE the lightbox movie, it was great watching Ducktales Z with it! I thank the staff here, they should be proud. Especially you Tom, your site helped me get a job! Does anyone know how hard it is to get a job you love to do! You can rest easy years from now knowing that Newgrounds helped a lot of people. Thank you for everything!

Great job on the re-design, I love it!
But hopefully you'll respond to this: I'm in the "NG Redesign Collab" and I was supposed to get co-author, but theres that problem with the buddy sytem. Anyway you could manually add co-authors for us, because we aren't receiving the credit we deserve. If so, that'd be awesome!

Contact John as well for who was supposed to be co, and let me know if you got this by replying to my comment ;D

Good to hear you're finally happy with Newgrounds. This redesign will change the world as we know it. I plan to use Newgrounds to my advantage, however I'm not spilling anything within here. Newgrounds is in fact Everything by Everyone and with the Redesign launched it truly is everything by everyone. Newgrounds, the one piece of America that is still America.

Jul. 18, 2007 | 2:29 AM MisterSambert says:

Man, since the first day I joined Newgrounds, I always wanted something like the user page feature you've added. Man, I'm so happy with this new Newgrounds! Excellent work to the whole team!

Jul. 18, 2007 | 3:02 AM Darkside7000 says:

Good word Tom, we need friends lists though!

Jul. 18, 2007 | 3:47 AM Rudy says:

Tom, I'd like to say congratulations on the Redesign. It's been a big success even though everything isn't accessible yet. I'm quite impressed with the userpages which makes me extremely happy, in the "yay department." I pimped out my page already, I can't wait to see everyone else's.

I guess the noobs will be lost when they come back to Newgrounds, lost as can be. Alot of people are wondering on how to find the Batting Average though which is a pest. ALOT, of Newgrounders are going to be asking continueslly, When the simple solution is that the batting average appears when you search your Newgrounds Alias, in the NG Search Bar -- When you hover over your icon, the Batting Average appears. But honestly, I think that's not a good idea. Like the batting average hover is a nice feature, but I beleive maybe make the batting average in the stats section under Voting.Power and what not. It'll make it easier for newcomers. Eh, that's just a thought.

Congratulations with the Launch though, Tom. You'll be hip always in my book! No matter what, I'm sure Newgrounds will never die. -- I won't let it.

Best Regards,
-Rudy

First off, the re-design is awsome, but i have a problem :(

Broken links, so far i have come across about 5 broken links today, don't know where else to put them so I'll put them here :)

Links to the RSS feeds don't seem to work (.xml pages)
Link to "Review guidelines" from the FAQ page (Under "Q: Is there any other way to affect Whistle Status?") is also broken.

Jul. 18, 2007 | 8:01 AM TomFulp responds:

We are aware of most the broken links - they will be getting fixed one by one as everything gets sorted out!

Jul. 18, 2007 | 7:06 AM cast says:

Way to go! I love Newgrounds more than ever now, I think the profiles are the coolest part about the redesign, apart from those visualizers Mike made, those really are something else. I love how organized and fresh everything is, even the code is smooth. All the entertainment you will ever need is right here! Thank you very much for Newgrounds, it's a beautiful thing.

Jul. 18, 2007 | 8:29 AM jackbliss says:

Congrats on the successful re-design Tom, but one thing that saddens me is that you've taken away the cool gem like stone trophies you used to get when your submission reaches more than 25K views or 50k etc. Also the trophies you win before used to line up so profoundly in your profile so you can show it to your friends (as they turn green with envy) now they're just numbers.

But anywayz the bytesize flash movies, user pages and overall site performance is amazing! Thank you so much for all the hardwork you and your staff put into making a website that really helps people showcase their Flash!

Goooo Newgrounds! Kick Youtube/Myspace/Flashplayers' ass lol lmao ok I'm dunnn... :-P

The redesign is a great step forward, without NG ending up as another generic Web 2.0 application. It's like the start of a new era of awesomeness.

Only thing that disappointed me a little is that I was hoping for some new grounds gold secrets. I need some new secrets to bridge the 3,5 years of depositing until that naked pics of yours :|

I heard that there will be Clock Crew post cards at the newgrounds stand. Is this a rumor or is it true? I wanted to go to Comiccon this year, but at the same time it overlapped with a family vacation/memorial thing for my late stepfather. Anyhow good luck with Comicon and be sure to take plenty of pictures.

Tom it would be nice of you to send me one of those cool little codes for the castle crashers game. I paid for alien hominid. cost me a years savings. Please tom fulp. I made my school like newgrounds. PLEASE.

Well, I don't have much to say but I hope NG will go on and on for a long time.
From a small fanzine to the biggest flash portal on the net, it's amazing how much NG has grown.
I have dreamt for a while to get a computer science degree and be an admin.
on Newgrounds. By the way, the new design is pretty cool.
When will portal buddies start working? Could you give an estimation?

Hello Tom Fulp, Hello Wade Fulp, Just Getting Back From Making Fun Of Wade Phulp, I Think You Are X-Tremely Lacked Of Tasted Because Def Leapord Is The Best Band In The World! So Write Back To Me Unless You Want Me To Eat Your Mom Like I Do Chilly, Hot and Spicy, With A Bit Of Semen, HAW HAW PHUNNY, I Am Going To Tell You The Same Thing I Told A Couple Of Lesbians Who Were Singing In An Irish Pub Near KilKarney, Shut The Hell Up, And Quit Masturbating In My Back Yard Hammock!

Really? Wow Tom, I like the part you said
"User pages are an extension of that same mentallity.

Essentially, every user page on Newgrounds should have the potential to emulate the traditional Newgrounds front page, but with control in the hands of the user who maintains it." It looks weird
