Pretty much everybody I know in real life knows Newgrounds as the yellow and black website they used to visit in elementary school to play that drag racing game or sim datings. Sadly, nobody has a clue who Tom Fulp is.

I was kinda surprised but when I told him who you were he was like "Man, that guy is awesome! He actually made Newgrounds? I doubt that some kid did though I always figured it was a company or something."

I showed him "Hi there! In case you didn't know, I created newgrounds. No, it wasn't made by some giant company - just some dumb kid. Yoink!" and he couldn't have been more surprised.

that gets me thinking - there should be something near 'the top' that is along the lines of 'what is newgrounds about?' i know there are already pages like it, but it's in a corner of the site i doubt few people would click on unless they were geniunely interested. but once you get them to click on something, there's a good chance they'll stick around and read if there's pictures or something equally eye-catching.

I see what you're saying, Tom. I came here for about a year before I actually knew about the Portal, you, the mods, admins, ranks, and even accounts. I would just click the Toons or Games buttons at the top, and just use the site from there. I have friends who show me things on here who found them in these sections. I'd guess that about 25% of the people who go here regularly just come here for the games and movies, but, then again, that's the whole point of the site, is it not?

I know it is. I have stickers and I put them around and some times (rarely) I get comments from strangers. They think the site is mainly a video game site.

Some people in a few of my computer classes go to the site, but don't post or know how to use it.

Hm. It's like that with a lot of sites though. A lot of people have that mentality of "Just show me the best and fuck the rest" I think they're missing the best though. Community is what drives me to NG everyday.

Those people are the ones funding NG, though. The regulars who are interested in the community probably never click on the ads. So I wouldn't look at it as if it was a bad thing. I didn't know about Tom Fulp or any of the staff workings until I actually signed up here and spent some time looking around.

I don't think i was ever ignorant of what was really going on around here, i just don't have the time to be involved, I _am very happy to look on via the sidelines and piss myself laughing at some of the stuff that goes on though :D

I get a massive hard-on just thinking about Castle Crashers. I started going to Newgrounds sometime in 2000, and created this profile about a year later after deciding it was one of the most entertaining sites I had seen around the internet. If you enjoy the content on a site and visit it frequently, it seems only logical that you would see who created it, how it started, and what it was all about.

You've turned countless regular doodle artists into aspiring talented ones by giving them the opportunity to let their works be seen by the masses. With small successes comes the motivation to create something grander, thus creating legendary artists and talent that would otherwise never have existed without your influence.

It's quite a pity there are people who don't recognize the contribution you've made to the world of animation.

You are a bad-ass fellow, and a genuinely nice guy in person, at least from the several times I've run into you at Comic-Con.

I'm sure that's a huge portion of NG visitors. You'd think that you should advertise deeper facts about the site, but that would just seem a little ridiculous after a while... "HELLO, I'M TOM FULP, AND I CREATED NEWGROUNDS!" plastered across the top of the layout... its weird, but its really the only way to do it... you have quite a dilemma. Maybe you just need to make more regular features acsessable to only members, that way people would feel the need to learn more about the site.

Yeah, it's hit or miss with me. I have a NG sticker on my laptop and I've been approached by more T.A.s and older students. They either identify with the logo or ask if I work for Newgrounds. I guess if there were games and movies that were URL locked to only work from the Newground's website and not allowed to proliferate to other content portals, you might start building up a stronger brand identity.

Then again, what I just said smells like disgusting corporate strategy.

Polls also show most people like the movies the most on NG.

I need to acquire more NG stickers, as the only one I had was from an award pack for getting on the top 5 for the month (on another profile). I slapped it on my car, but it faded and ultimately peeled off. The 120 degree weather in Arizona didn't help its longevity much.

I've had a few people recognize Newgrounds from a shirt I was wearing, but the topic of who created it was never brought up.

Simple probability says that only a small percentage of people who actually visit the site will feel inclined to be active in the community and learn anything about the site. This example from Dan also goes to show that no matter how you organize the frontpage or how much information you try to cram on to it, the majority of visitors only care about the games and movies. I think you should start labeling your news posts "HENTAI DATING SIM DRESS-UP CHEATS HERE" or something to that effect.

I never get remarks on my NG t-shirts, but my Xbox Live logo is the NG tank (from the AH picture pack), and I get comments on that all the time. I tell them where I got the pic from and how AH is related to NG, if they aren't aware.

1) they probably never go to the BBS which means they never see pictures of you or Wade
2)they probably have never noticed that a few games were made made by TomFulp or they didn't notice the significance of it
3) if the don't have accounts, or if they have emails turned off, they would never receive emails from you (with your name in them).

To put it in perspective, i've been going to ABS since around the first time i saw the joe-cartoon of the hamster in the microwave, and i don't know who the creator of that site is.

i know there isn't gonna be a whole lot of people that actually bother to read my comment, but i'll post it anyway and just PRETEND that someones interested in my thoughts.

Anyway, i used to be one of those people (though not for 3 freakin' years) myself, for about a month. i just assumed the whole 'forums', 'flahs portal', 'audio portal' and all the community related stuff was just a side thing like a secondary story on a TV show. Then, since i realised that the site was totally kick ass, i joined up and found out stuff about Tomfulp, Pico, Tankmen, the flahs/audio portals and the crews, and i realised that the community is just as important (if not more) as the games and toons sections, because its what separates NG from all the other game sites like freeonlinegames and miniclip. Later (like a year later) i talked to a friend about how, since they used NG so much, they should create an account, and there response was a flat, shocking 'Why?' and it made me think about the times when i would have said that myself, just like this is now...

PS how many people need to be a smartass and reply with 'who is tom fulp'? It's just getting to be plain annoying...

I was the same way when I was first coming to the site. The forums were the place to go to get in the know after all, and I didn't know that for a bit. The place was just for games and movies for me and many of my friends back then.

I think the first thing I ever watched on this site was a DBZ flash with animated gifs fighting and remember thinking "This site has tons of movies and games like this? Awesome!" Heh, i really didn't care about the "management."

If you ask me, it really depends on the audiences's level of dedication. These girls just represent the first phrase of NG invovlement; watching or playing games on the go, with small interest in what the NG community is all about.

With that said, these girls still fans of NG (through a small way) and for being dedicated to NG for at least three years, that something a webmaster can still to be proud of. Luckily, you got a rather large dedicated user base that supports you and what NG has become. The amount of "Thanks tom" in flash description and credits truly tells that story.
