How long has NG been around now and still going strong?
I say do it.
Stats being stats yes, but who cares about facebook(the father of twitter), twitter(oh tweet me, still sounds gay), or myspace(which actually has a pretty flashy design now).
All I'm saying is do what you know works man.
Regardless of what happens, I'm still pro NeoGeo.

Personally as a sort of new NG user I'd have to disagree with that article because NG has always been one of my favorite sites and I find the design to attract my attention and keep me here more than be appalled by it and leave the site instantly.

No, of course not. It's not overbearing at all. I hate the simplicity and mediocrity of Youtube, Dailymotion and all those other shitty ass video sharing sites that I only use for the sake of reformatting porn.

I love the design. It's not overbearing in the slightest.

Hmm, it makes me think, I never really considered it beforehand, but yeah, I think these guys have SOME point.

Newgrounds isn't a mess, but it's in the "getting there" stage.
When you first load up the site, everything is NOT there right infront of you, yes, you have the movies, and the news, and the tabs, however, to see the rest of the content you have to scroll down.

And you've got quite a ways to scroll, ever wonder why the art portal and audio portal are so under-apreciated? Because they're at the very bottom of course!

If Newgrounds could find a way to put it all right there in front of you when you first load the page, that is, a little bit of movies, games, music, and art, then it'll all be a little bit more pleasing.

Another thing is that the side-screen ads on the front page have really made it messy, I know you can't change it, but find some sort of alternative to make it a bit less obtrusive and... messy.

I mean, look at all that space Newgrounds could be using! Maybe it's because I have a wide monitor, but the "newgrounds" part of newgrounds takes a small little sliver in the middle of my screen, there's more un-used space then used space.

Also, about the search bar... I think Newgrounds has the single most unused search bar in any big name site, aside from the Audio Portal, which the average person won't visit (c'mon, lets be honest, unless you have an account, you won't use the audio portal... at all, nobody goes searching for it as much as they should.)

I'm looking forward to the redesign, like I said, this is stuff I had to think about, I've just gotten used to newgrounds so much that frankly I don't care.

I'm glad that you asked about this. For years, I've been using Newgrounds to watch animations and play games, commenting and rating them as well, and one thing that was on my head all the time is the design of Newgrounds. Perhaps because I'm a webdesigner myself, I usually pay attention to the many details of every site I use.

I have to say that, I always liked the clean and direct display of information, specially when we talk about Social Media Networks, but Newgrounds actually is most sucessfull at the task of making a great social network with a nice and detailed visual aspect.

From the black border with dashed corners that wraps around the "boxes" that compose the website, to the color palette (the amazing combination of gray tones with yellow text for links and titles, great backgrounds that changes over the time, the website is very well composed.

I've never liked white text over dark backgrounds, but somehow it fits with the general composition of the website.

However, for a new user (as I was years ago), a few of these composition features in the design, contribute to a confusion in navigation and even in decision making, when navigating in the animations and games listings. It's hard to find something to watch when you don't know what to look for, and this is bad for the youngest (or oldest) users who aren't used to navigate the web and / or Newgrounds.com

A cleaner design sometimes make a better-looking website, rather then a bunch of detailed graphics. I know that most of users may have powefull connections, but if you think about the myriad of new users that are starting connecting to the web now, and sometimes doesn't have the same luck, these details in the visual aspect of the website can overcome it's better features: the integration between art display and community-oriented content.

I hope that Newgrounds continue improving these factors to a better user experience.
