Hi there! In case you didn't know, I created newgrounds. No, it wasn't made by some giant company - just some dumb kid who now has help. I also co-founded the Behemoth; we made Alien Hominid and Castle Crashers. Icon by Pegosho, banner by OmenaKettu.

I was lucky enough to visit Saint Petersburg last month (yes, in Russia not Florida), and one of the most memorable places there was Pushkinskaya-10. It's one of these artist communities you're talking about, probably the oldest in town, and they've managed to turn it into both a museum for visitors and still keep it as an art community/collective where people live and have their own workshops.
It was really cool, and through speaking to the people there you could get a sense that there was a real comradery and history behind it all, but as you said, it's also hard to imagine a place like that could ever get going from scratch in this day and age, anywhere (the epilogue of that video you've posted says it all). Where I live in Spain there's definitely an *attempt* to foster that, but unless you're in Barcelona the rest are almost exclusively subsidized, so it never really feels like anyone has an actual pulse on the culture. A community center is obviously not anywhere as raw and authentic as one of these singular, converted buildings. Maybe it's just where I live, but damn if I don't wish that there were more spaces like that.
cant believe tom just made a news post with a lady eating poop
Boomhauer is that you?
Fellas we need to source Tom Fulp a UFO so he can take comfy roadtrips whenever.
Now that's fascinating. I might watch some of those videos soon.
Welcome to Fulptown!
Yo, isn't it strange, how these Virginian towns, look so totaly poverty stricken and abandoned?
Yet, I saw no single place throughout the whole video, looking vandalised, looted, burned down or demolished?
Only some wood panels covering a few windows, at most. And some overgown shrubbery, here and there.
Almost like most of the houses have been abandoned, but somehow, the hobo's and the hoodlum youths and whatnot, seemed to have left the houes and the whole area respectfully in the shape they found it in.
Also, no oil-drum or garbage-bin campfires, no carpet of crackheads sprinkled all over the streets.
No streets full of smashed-in windows, you can see some whole stores like how they were left in the freaking 40s!
Like, damn, that's one beautifull looking shithole of a town if I ever saw one.
Then you take look at the bad neighbourhoods in the big cities... Double or tripple the property value (yeah, some real value right there, haha!) and it reeks of piss around every corner, needles on the sidewalks, the most ugly no-effort graffiti you can imagine, shady people hiding their faces under their hoods, garbage all over the strees, etc, etc.
Bizzare contrast for sure.

Easily my favorite house in the video.
Abso-f*cking-lutely dropdead bloody gorgeous.
Also that little train caboose house, a minute after that. Charming as all hell.
This is all really interesting stuff. So much so that I'm making it a point to bookmark this post so I can actually check out everything mentioned.
Years of OneyPlays caused me to think of you as just the nice guy with a big ass, turns out there's more to the story!
Really interesting read. I had no idea about the Dubai Chocolate one (it randomly popped up in my recommendations one day despite me never watching anything related to it)
Something I've been pondering over lately is how bombarded we are by advertisement. Open a game to play on your phone AD try and watch a cat video friend sent AD trying to visit a website to look up AD!! XD Even just going outside to take a drive to the shops, Ads everywhere!
So reading that concept behind TikTok...makes so much sense, it is terrifying XD
Thank you for sharing with us ^-^
When we went to the Jersey shore this summer, the boardwalk was plastered with Dubai Chocolate promos everywhere, along with Labubu. I still haven't tried Dubai Chocolate, some of the bars were $20.
so glad to be here
Been out of the loop of internet stuff outside of what friends discuss. It's absolutely insane the advertising hellhole every social media is. I jumped ship from most social sites and I really don't regret it. Every time I tried TikTok I just didn't get it. This is my first time seeing that Dubai chocolate thing... Ew
GODDAYUM, 30 Grand????
The fall and decline of modern civilization by Tom Fulp
The town my wife grew up in is doing that transition to an artist commune thing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QdU4QWmAWXg
It really kicked off when we legalized weed, and that started a small marijuana tourism boom (mostly people from New Mexico and Texas). That transitioned into art festivals and attracted some artist to set down roots.
Then the city itself got funding to offer rent controlled housing for people producing art, and all of this attracted a bunch of chefs from Denver to set up some nicer dining options.
The main town is still struggling, but in the middle of downtown it's like a little oasis that's been spreading out. It's slowed a bit since other states legalized weed, but apparently it's still working, largely because property is still worth nothing down there.
I wonder what would happen if something with the potential for larger revenues came around, like a AA game studio, or a collective of indie game devs pumping out a steady stream of profitable games.
The tough sell on these towns is how far away they are from major transportation hubs. Like if you need to do conventions to get your stuff seen and build media hype, you gotta drive 3-4 hours just to catch a plane anywhere.
They're supposed to be doing a hyperloop train that would cut like 2.5 hours off that trip, but those projects always end up being scams that never get finished.
I can't imagine what would happen to these forgotten towns if the major travel hubs got connected to them by high speed rail so you could live like a 2 hour car ride away from your job but only have a 30 minute commute.
A major infrastructure investment like that could go a LONG way to solving the housing crisis. Would also probably have major ramifications on electoral maps, which could be why it'll never happen...
Also... while I get your point about TikTok not truly being meant to compete with YouTube... I also wish more YouTube stuff was like TikTok after all these 30+ minute videos you posted that I ain't got time to fully watch lolol.
@TomFulp Oh god, Labubu XD I only recently discovered it existed after watching news on adults attacking each other or ugly crying over them.
Haven't seen them in shops here due to the price, but you can get buy the paste for like $30. Then you have to buy the rest of the ingredients and still make the chocolate yourself XD I'll stick to my M&Ms for now
there's something just so endearing about tom being like this, like, mellowed-out down-to-earth chill but cool internet uncle, like, just typing this stuff out is so fascinating to me for reasons that definitely are not intentional, so many dotcom bubble burst survivors have either eventually lost their way or just died out (or whatever the fuck ebaumsworld and myspace are these days) in an increasingly more and more centralized net but seeing this and just the way newgrounds is run in general, after all these years, is just so refreshing and fills my cold, dark and petrified soul with hope that i would otherwise see as naive and ignorant to the direction of the net these days, like, this is isn't coming from nostalgia or farnsworth's rose tinted glasses, i didn't start using the net until 2012 and even then, it'd be a LONG time before i'd know about ng or any of the deeper nuance, layers and greater scope of the net and it's history. (like ffs, i didn;t start using yt regularly or find out what a "meme" is until 2016) im just seeing all this stuff long after the fact and its honestly just.. something else dood, really something else.. anyway- keep doin this uncle tom!! we love it!!!!

@NickSenny the future generation is thriving! i love jerking off to Dubai chocolate vids
