Many submissions are posted by 3rd-party artists and developers who post, in large part, because of the exposure that NG provides them. They submit some of the best content on NG and feed NG's popularity. That popularity increases the exposure of their work and makes NG even more attractive to the content developers. It's a mutual-self-promotion symbiosis, and it's the formula for success that fuels sites like DV and others like it. If you're not happy with NG acting as a forum for promoting external developers, you could start banning/penalizing anyone and anything that links away from NG. But, this would alienate many developers and make NG more insular and incestuous. The end result of a move in this direction would be a reduction in the quantity, quality and variety of NG's content. The NG users are the ones who will suffer for it.
Lockesmyth has a point, but there is a definite point where a symbiotic relationship becomes a draining viral relationship that leaves the host with no traffic. I think NG is far from shooting its own foot, but it is a possibility.
Mainly i'm sad when i see pointless plugs for other sites on the NG front page because i like to read artist news in the artist news section.
