Hi there! In case you didn't know, I created newgrounds. No, it wasn't made by some giant company - just some dumb kid who now has help. I also co-founded the Behemoth; we made Alien Hominid and Castle Crashers. Icon by Pegosho, banner by OmenaKettu.

I'm not sure how I get on the lists but I receive daily emails with news from the realm of social networking / social media, with reports on the latest happenings with Facebook, Twitter, etc. Today there was an article titled "Rules for Social Media Designers to Live By", and one rule in particular made me curious:

"Create a party, not a museum. Great social products are clean, simple, and fast. The successful ones have little design flare, so that the people, photos, videos, text, and comments are front and center. The more design you add from colors to treatments, non-web-fonts, and graphics, the less your social application will feel like a party and the more it will feel like a museum. Or a magazine. Neither are a great goal. You want your social product to feel like it is a living and breathing party, not expensive furniture you're not supposed to sit on."

First off, I have always considered Newgrounds to be a 24/7 party and I believe it is MORE of a party than other social sites, which are more like pockets of people along the walls vs the free-for-all "everybody knows your name" spirit of NG... or at least I try to know every ones' names... and I'm probably seeing it all through rose-colored glasses.

Regardless, the way this article says you have to get there is by having a site that is clean and simple, with little design flare. This plays up to an insecurity of ours, where we wonder if the aesthetic design of NG has a tendency to overpower the content and make NG less welcoming for contributors and visitors.

Our upcoming redesign is the most visually impressive NG layout yet and I like to think it will prove people like this wrong... but I am curious... WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK? Does our graphically robust layout make the site less welcoming? I'm especially curious to hear the thoughts from anyone passing through who doesn't consider themselves a die-hard NG fan.

first post tom.

I'm surprised that whenever I walk to the water cooler I don't see my user page on your monitor!

what did i think....hmm

I think as long as the code can remain clean and accessible newgrounds can always zag while the rest of the world 'zigs'. I think the only thing that bugs me about ng and its carefully handcrafted design is how inaccessible it becomes when its on a mobile device. It seems more and more standard for sites to have a more mobile friendly presence (even if the bulk of the offering of the site is flash ie not supported by Apply). I think even having something as a lite version where you can check your pm's or userpage for comments or just read / respond new reviews via mobile would be welcome. Maybe even be able to queue up audio portal stuff into a playlist i dunno...

Ultimately we intend to have a good mobile interface for NG, but mobile interfaces are one of those things that can drain a lot of resources, especially from a really small team like ours. Meanwhile, the mobile landscape is constantly changing and I worry about having to play catch-up by the time we get something launched. At the least I do want to make core functions easier and more streamlined on small screens.

Stop making me curious.

I think the juicy feel of the site lends to the content submitted. Take the simple things you guys added to the portal, like expand and dim the lights for instance. Those types of flares enhance the feel of everything. I don't think there is a single spot on the site that has "museum" like qualities.

Personally I think whoever wrote that "hint list for a successful site" is probably a stomped douche with a smidge of cunt cheese stuck in the tip.

Keep doing what you're doing, they'll just keep copying you.

The more links on a page the more hectic it becomes, especially on a front page. Having only a few different areas would make things less hectic, having a showplace for a few games and movies with links to other areas and maybe one new column would be much clearer for people. There are a lot of things going on on the main page and while informative it seems busy to someone who has never used it. Thats kind of the beauty of google in that it starts so simple you can quickly know what you are there for. I don't know anything about the redesign but it would probably be a good idea to clean up some of the excess spots on the front page, the todo list, the store featured item, maybe just new store item icon. One news post with links to a list of newposts instead of the forum type setup you have. Links to artist news instead of easily spammed icon things.

Just a few ideas, I am interested in the process the mind goes through to evaluate information.

The redesign does streamline things a good bit, for example the top nav is much more clear and will probably shock some people at first.

However, I already have a list of things to change on the new front page, but those changes require some back-end infrastructure changes that would further delay the redesign launch so I don't want to address them until after launch. I think I'll be pretty happy with it once those changes are in place, though.

Eh.... its fine, every thing isent weloming at first, never jude a book by its cover i love NG as it is i've ben looking at this web sight for a prittly long time, and no it is not less welcoming or inviting but i'll have to see what NG can come up in the future to make my judement 100% for me but i think its fine as it is dont fix it if it an't broke. Newgrounds is really not a social networking site...
It's a flash portal with kickass forums, awesome audio and art, and all that jazz. It is a unique site that shouldn't follow the sheep that Myspace and Facebook are.

What I'm saying is, just keep up the good work. The site looks decent the way it is now, I have no idea what to expect from a future redesign. The last one KNOCKED MY SOCKS OFF.

This one will KNOCK THEM BACK ON!

Tom, facebook was taken over by "society" and "society" wantes to make everything bland and not colorful. Newground is like the hippie. WE ARE LOUD AND COLORFUL AND DONT GIVE A FUCK THAT WERE DIFFERENT FROM ANYONE ELSE LOL. We have our own comminuity that are all friends because we thing the same thing. Blue and white is boring, characters and words jumping out of the page is where it is at.

do you have a link to the article? it'd be interesting to read more of it.

anyway in my opinion it might be a little deterring to an author if the game or movie they're making isn't as graphically robust as the website they're putting it on. If you only come to NG for playing games or going on the BBS, then a nice looking website with a clean interface is definitely the way to go.

God I hate our blog system sometimes.

I just like that visually NG is very dark, it's the only site I can think of off the top of my head that doesn't have a glaring white background. Sites like facebook with their vast amount of white space and neat clean design feel very sterile and artificial, much like a museum.

As with most things there is a fine line between functional, to eyecandy, to over doing it. Facebook's design is simple, Google design is simple and both works; only that though. Now when you dig into what that article is suggesting, take a look at MySpace's recent redesgin. The frontpage is over bloated with information and it really lags on my lowly computer. It really takes away from what the user wants to do: look at comments, view others' userpages, etc. As so long a the redesign isn't too over bearing and the user is able to get to point A to B whatever that might be (View a movie to write a Review, View one game and be able to suggest/find another that user might like, etc.) then I'm sure it'll be fine.

Regardless, if there is something the users hate they'll voice it in 17 threads on the BBS anyways. :P

I've had people tell me that they didn't like NG because it was too overwelming when they first visited. These are also the same people that prefer Kongregate and claim "it is the best and first games site because it has medals and levels and shit." These people are morons if you haven't figured it out yet.

NG is probably the most refined and fluid website on the internet. Think about it Tom; how many people have been revising their website since 1999 continuously?

Quite honestly, the graphic design of NG is important. I don't see how something that looks neat can discourage one from venturing further into the site. Furthermore, this is mainly a site for impressing others with animation, art, musical, and other creative skills. The social stuff takes place in reviews and the BBS. (Of course, you already know this Mr. Fulp.)

Mobile stuff?!

My Samsung Epic will finally be truly epic!

FIRST POST FROM FINLAND
OMG OMG OMG!!!

I remember signing up for Newgrounds. Here's kind of what happened:

"Holy mother of God what is this Flash business? Must learn."

"Oh dear lord there's music too."

"Wow this cartoon's funny. Wow this game is fun. WHY IS THERE SO MUCH TO DO?"

I signed up because I knew I'd never get bored. I remember seeing those (old design) buttons at the top of the page. Games, Toons, Series, Audio, Portal, and whatever else. It was like walking into an amusement park. That aesthetic is what drew me in, and I think it gives a warm, personal feel to the site.

I don't have a Facebook. It's because there's nothing for me to do there. Sure, it's welcoming and I guess it'd be easy for me to make an account, but then what? Click "Like" and make snarky comments on my friends' pictures? Here, I can explore EXACTLY WHAT INTERESTS ME whenever I feel like it. I'm getting into Dubstep specifically because of Newgrounds, just because the atmosphere let me know that I wouldn't be let down. There's a giant list of songs ordered by score, and I can figure out what I like. If I'm not in the mood, I'll play some games or watch some toons; if not, I'll plan a Flash; if not, I'll make some icons; etc., ET CETERA. There's just tons and tons to do.

I don't think that's intimidating to people. My friends don't have accounts here, but they'll stop by and play a game off of the front page or something. They don't say "OH MY GOD THIS WEBSITE ISN'T STREAMLINED ENOUGH" and cover their monitor with a towel out of fear.

So, no, I don't think people are turned off by the aesthetic of the site. If anything, it should give them reason to hang around. The people that do create the tightly-knit community, which is a big part of what sets us apart from Facebook of Kongregate.

GO TEAM

P.S. Fuck that article. Who the hell goes to a party with balloons of all the same color?

Can you remind me, why you hired that lazy ass luis at first place?
I dont agree with the staff-page, that stamper is the one who wastes company's time and money, i think it is luis. What a prick!! >:(

I just made this post to piss you off.

You know what would be real good, an intro page just like mindchambers website. :3
