Hi there! In case you didn't know, I created newgrounds. No, it wasn't made by some giant company - just some dumb kid who now has help. I also co-founded the Behemoth; we made Alien Hominid and Castle Crashers. Icon by Pegosho, banner by OmenaKettu.

Collaboration

Posted by TomFulp - March 4th, 2008

Wyclef Jean was on Stern this morning and the topic of his new song, "Fast Car", came up. Wyclef explained how his brother had come up with the concept, and he (Wyclef) had written most of the song out, but it wasn't until he went to a charity event at Paul Simon's house that it all came together. He said that after shaking Paul's hand and checking out Paul's studio, he got hit with the vibe for the song and decided to go acoustic. He called Paul the next day and invited him to participate, to which Paul responded with something along the lines of "I'll grab my guitar and come on over!"

Five hours later, they had the song. Wyclef explained how Paul took everything he had written, and brought it all together in four lines (the bridge), which became Paul's part of the song.

It was just cool to picture Paul picking up his guitar, running over to Wyclef's place, and banging out a song. We have things KINDA like that happen here on NG, but it would be cool if it could happen on a level more like that. Like if everyone lived near eachother, and people could just run across the street and collaborate in real time whenever the spirit of the moment grabs them. I guess that's how Hollywood became Hollywood.

Yeah, thats pretty exciting. To have a celebrity pop their head around must be an honor. Hopefully, Newgrounds can grab a moment like that though.

Ok Tom, here we go. You just pop over here to the UK, we discuss our ideas for an interesting new development involving Newgrounds. I go back over there and start working for you and BINGO! Somebody will be listening to us talk about it on the radio!

No need to thank me. :D

Yeah Tom, that'd be cool...

Buy Abington Township and remake it in your own image. This town needs less strip malls and more castles.

I think a more practical thing than buying a town would be to hold a Newgrounds Mashup, where we all bring laptops to a certain location for a weekend and have small meetup full of food, frivolity, and Flash (and possibly other words that start with F).

Yeah that actually was more what I had in mind... Like ever since we had that "Flash Sleepover" where we made Queers of War... I've been wanting to do more nights like that, where we just stay up all night and all make something crazy. You can do it on-line, but it's fun to have everyone in one room, with all the energy bouncing around.

So eventually we'll do it on a larger scale, I hope. :)

hi dude l am good at this

You realize that I (28 years old) would be sitting in a room full of 15 year kids.

No offense, but I would rather keep my distance from 99% of Newground's demographic. Especially since only a fraction actually contribute to the portal.

On that note, is there any way you could post some NG statisitcs? Like how many registered users have actually contributed anything to the portal? What's the average age of a newgrounds user? How many submissions actually get over 4.0, 3.0, blammed. How many submissions make the front page? etc...

That would be rather informative.

Yeah, we really need to run some stats... I know there are THOUSANDS of users who have submitted Flash... But that is out of hundreds of thousands of users. In our last poll, I think something like 2/3rds of the respondants considered themselves to be "content creators." That isn't how our official stats would stack up, though.

yea that would be cool, hey how about u come over and live in California? ill get u a good house here in the ghetto :)

This is completely irrelevant but I think you should add your beard to your display picture and your level icon.

If this ever happens, how are you gonna fit all those 13 year olds in a stadium?

You should buy an island JUST to call it Costa Del Fulp. Seriously though, none of us have enough in common other than makin funky games n whatnot.
And what the hell, you made Queers of War at a sleepover? Now that makes it even weirder =/

Also, while you're here, why not REPLY TO MY PMs?

Surely you have toyed with the idea of creating a collaboration system here on NG?

I know you already have the multi-author system in place, but I'm talking about some sort of system where content creators who are working on the same project can upload their files and resources to be visible by their peers. They could have a discussion board too. Oh, and the ability to create a list of prospective songs linking to the Audio Portal =).

I know there are many online services that do just that. I'm not sure how well they work, though, and I can imagine hundreds of projects being founded by people who never get it off the ground. Who knows, though. Maybe it would be a great tool for serious collaborators to have built-in to NG.

This is reminiscent of the idea you guys had for the Audio Portal where Flash authors could put out requests for certain types of music (providing a detailed description) and audio authors could suggest their music if they feel it fits. It's really tough to browse through thousands of songs in the AP when you are the only one who knows what you want.

You could create some sort of "master list" of music requests and have it sorted so the oldest ones are on top. Perhaps award-winning authors could have a distinguishing mark. Maybe Flash authors could have check boxes for what genre of music they need so specialized artists can scope out their territory. Just throwing some ideas out there.

The AP just seems like its own little island at the moment, even with the foolproof crediting system. You need to build a bridge that makes it a viable and accommodating resource somehow.

I know you have a massive to do list for this site, but we're on the topic of collaboration, right? ;)

Yeah... A bunch of those things are on my mind all the time... I hope we get to finally follow through on more of it. :)

Swain and I are sieging the chop shop

also to mongoid: there's plenty of 20+ flashers around here :)

I would feel more encouraged to run around flash collabing people in the night if my skills weren't 90% programming. Most collabs don't require programming skillz.

My Neighbor, MTBooner, love to make flash and this happens all the time between us.

It's a lot of fun!

Pretty cool indeed. Though I like living in desolated areas of the wilderness with little people around . . . now that we all have webcams though, and they're getting better and better, problem solved.

Music collabs are awesome. One time about a year ago, I wrote a song with no means to record it, so I put some info out to some musician friends I know online, and they recorded it for me. I don't know these people in real life, and some of them haven't met with eachother either, so there was quite a distance between us, but we still managed to deliver the goods. I think it turned out with about 5 of us, from America, England, the Netherlands and Australia, and that's the first time that I got to hear one of my proper songs (with lyrics) as an actual recording. If you want to listen, you can, here: http://forum.bandamp.com/Audio_Review /4083.html

I don't really know of any people I could write songs with in my little Australian town, so I think that the internet is a great way to collaborate. There's been a lot going on with the "continue the song game", after the first and second songs, we've got 3 teams for the third one, and I feel that with that added competition, it makes us work closer as a group, whereas the first two were first come first serve, when you're online next, get your part done. It feels more like a collaboration now.

But definitely, one day, I'd like to make contacts with other musicians/composers like myself, so I can collaborate, like that. Maybe when I move out of home...

you rule!
